Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

I am both happy and sad. I am sending off the Boy from Meagans Basque hens today. At least he will get some girls and be in a breeding program there.

The Egg farmer here is very flaky and I do not think he understands what this is. We are getting very far into the season and he only wants to hatch Bresse and Arkansas blues....

Oh well, I am supposed to get a pen set up for the Pita Pintas and I really want to get them going this year.

i can't find my camera! it has to be here somewhere. my partride penedesencas are grwing like bad weeds and i still have no photos. hope i find it soon.

one of the roosters must have stuck his little leg into the plastic feeder that screws onto a canning jar and injured himself. i isolated him with one of the hen chicks and after about 5 days,he is walking normally.. what a relief!

please excuse my typing. i had rotator cuff surgery 9 days ago. it is too far to use the shift key with one hand. my left wing is trussed up like a turkey ready for roasting, it is going to be several weeks before they will un truss me.

my hens are just now laying well, so a late season here.

My second set of eggs are hatching...the partridge penedesenca/Maran crosses. They are a day early... and seem to be strong, I have three under the heat lamp so far, and more peeping. The fan and the different thermometer helped. There are 29 more eggs but I don't think all will hatch, but hopefully, many more will. Whoo hooo..... exciting.

My old Jack russell is keeping a watch on them and really would like to wash their bottoms. She has nursed several litters of pups that were not hers, but she thought they should be, She is so cute to watch... and watch closely so there are no accidents.

Looks like I will be building a new bigger chicken house this summer.

Thanks again Ron. I just cleaned out the incubator 4 of my empordanesa I set hatched ( out of 5 I think) none of the crele shipped to me did.
I will be setting these with more Empordanesa and black penedesenca and possibly crele. I have to see if @jerryse wants any Monday or Tuesday though

Well, my hen that was supposed to pull me out of the feather condition ditch, might not be capable of doing so. She was laying faithfully every other day. Then she stopped for like a week and a half to two weeks, got in and spent some time in the nest box but didn't leave an egg, then a couple days later laid an egg that was funky, a few days after that she laid a soft shelled one on the poop board and then this morning she was in the nest again but didn't leave an egg.

I'm afraid she has developed peritonitis. Her last eggs in the incubator quit on me so I guess she's a dead end.

On the bright side though, I discovered a hen of my breeding, one of the girls from last year, I know who the dad was but I have no idea who the mother was... she has really nice quality feathers! I almost gasped out loud when I saw those feathers! So, she will be taking the place of the hen mentioned above. This new girl, has almost no lacing, she's small but you can see her hock joints easily and she carries her tail almost straight up!

Why me?

On second thought, I think I'll wait a bit. I'm going to check all of my other girls (which I like a lot more) for good feathering. Then I'll decide whether or not to use her!
This first girl is really confusing me. The last 3 days she has laid 3 perfectly formed eggs for me. I don't know if I should take advantage of this or not. I certainly don't want to breed from a hen that I think might be prone to peritonitis. On the other hand, this stuff only started happening after her pen mate was culled. She was suddenly alone even though she is in the main barn separated from the rest of the flock by a wire fence. Maybe she will be alright after all.

Thanks guys!

One of my other hens squatted for me this morning so I grabbed her and checked out just one of her wings, it was kind of an afterthought. She actually appeared to have a nice tight web! Not super wide but at least they weren't frayed! I don't generally try to catch them during the day, particularly if it promises to be a very warm day. I need my son to help me at night because I made their perch as high as I could because they like it that way. I can get a bird down if I need to but its difficult for me. I'll go back out in a little while and if she does it again, I'll definitely pick her up and spread both wings all the way out! Then tonight, if I can get my son to help me before he dashes back into the house after closing up, I'll be good to go.

As it turns out, this particular hen has pretty nice wing feathers. I had my son pull down 4 girls for me that night and as two are quite promising, I'm pretty excited about the possibility of making more!
