Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

Yes it is small, and thank you.

My birds are not as nice as many out there. All I can do is work with what I have as every time I try to get others to improve mine, everything always falls through.

I've been told by some that I should just dump all of them and start over. Well, if I cannot get any to add to my flock, how on earth will I replace them. They're not trash to me, I see their potential and I'm willing to work with them to bring that potential to the surface. I don't mean to rant, sorry if its taken that way, I was just sharing my predicament.

I am very very happy with some of my youngsters growing out this year. They are an improvement over their parents. That's the first step. I'll just keep taking itty bitty steps once a year until my birds are something to envy! Ha ha ha! Not likely, but I can dream eh?

Right on!

Keep working with what you have. Some new ones will come your way sometime.

We have some options going for Megan's Basque and Pita Pintas.

I have Pita Pintas now and have have a Basque pullet. @chrissyr
has been hatching out Megan x skyline chicks this summer. She has a nice cockerel from Megan and the combination is hatching out nice chicks.

Have you heard from Megan?
Ron you must be thinking of someone else. I don't have any meganxskyline birds.
I have Marans (BBS :eek:riginally wade jean line), BCM (originally mostly ovalle and some Adamson lines), jubilee orps, cream legbars, Bresse, OE ,
And way too many of other things :)

Sorry!

I will have to check my records and get back on here for that.

It is @CackleJoy that has one of Megan's Roosters.

Honestly, Ron, Every thing you say makes sense for a breeder who needs to make the books balance, but, Since I have never incubated and hatched , if I purchased an incubator, all the needed "stuff", paid for the eggs and so on, I would be in pretty deep.

I am not a spendthrift by any means, but I don't want to get in over my head when I am not sure that I want to propagate either breed. Knowing this, can you help me find a couple or three of nice marraduna basque and pita pinta pullets and maybe a rooster? If not, then maybe day old chicks?

I am sorry if this might seem to be off topic, but I am here to learn all I can of these 2 Spanish Breeds I also have 1 black Australorp, a joy to have.
Hi, I caught this thread when Ron tagged me. I have some lovely

EOB. Not perfect but hatching at a consistent improvement over the first line I had. Where are you located?

Lacy Blues,
How many chickens do you have? I am afraid of not being able to calculate the chicken math needed to keep this a hobby

I told my DH that I was not going to keep too many birds! He will help me with anything I ask, but is not particularly fond of chickens, relating back to his younger days, having to help in family chicken houses.
I really like the looks of the Pita Pinta and am wondering if you have seen any genetic issues popping up during your time breeding them?
Ron, same question to you. From what I have read on the EO Basque thread here on BYC, I believe started in 2006 or 2007, the EO has been quite a challenge for your dedicated SOP breeders. I admire the effort all of you are making. If there is a standard in the country of origin, then the standard should be honored by all breeders. Congratulations to all of you!

The Basque hens from skyline did have a bit problem with leg color. I also hatched out a mille fleur pullet from him that is not SOP and should not be used. The ones that Megan brought in from Spain are spot on though.

The Pita Pintas have a tendency to be knock kneed and last year a couple had white legs. This year the legs were all yellow so progress has been made on that front.

I'm not counting my chickens right now because I have way too many. I was able, with Ron's help, to get excellent hatches this past spring. But winter is coming quickly now and I have to slim down the numbers. I need to let them grow up quite a bit so I can really tell what I have. They are not Pita Pintas though, I only have large fowl and bantam (project) Andalusians. They change drastically between molts and I don't want to make the mistake of culling out a really nice bird before it actually shows up.

My husband is basically the same as yours... except he will only help me if I'm hurt or in a major hurry. He pays the bills though and I'm fairly independent so it's ok.

Ron, does selecting for abdominal capacity breed out the knock kneed problem? I've never had it and I hope I don't so I'm wondering if there is a way to deal with it.
