Poultry/Small Animal Swap Meet - TSC Georgetown KY 9/18/10

Update on JB( I will only maintain an name for the chicken for C's sake!) He's in with the other chicks and he thinks he's gonna be the Big Splort. My oldest black orp pullet -who btw is the most unagrressive bird EVER - put him in his place. He's settling in ok, but I think he's very unhappy about being told what to do! PPF, How old is he anyway?

Cetawin, glad to know you're still married!!! I'm tempted to ask for those drakes - let me know if the current plan falls through. Oh, and tell C that Jeff was not happy to wake up and find his Kangaroo gone!! LOL!!

WGC - glad you got home in time! Those were sweet little chicks you brought. I'm sure Dexter will find his place in the world soon enough.

To everyone else who came - THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was totally cool to meet everyone. I have had so many requests to set up a monthly swap. I think we are going to do just that. Just have to pick a day and get it set up.

Also, I want to thank everyone for the VARIETY of birds they brought. It was really neat to see so many different kinds of birds. That was AMAZING!!!!

I know, right! I think he would have sold off parts of the van for it. He was very excited about that one!

I am pretty sure the lady is on BYC that I bought a little black white bird that my son insists is an Egyptian. I tried to look up the breed to find out what to expect but I can't find the breed anywhere. What did I buy? That boy had me running all over the meet and I am more than a tad confused on how it all happened yesterday. I know I got lots of puppy dog looks.

I told my husband he should turn out some straight razors so I can trade for more chickens. I wonder how many chickens a nice straight is worth. I'll worry about that once this quarantine is done and over with. I bought 3 yesterday that started odd noises that developed into a sneeze by this morning. So my quarantine is going to be LONG. Thankfully I have the babies inside to keep me occupied. Those really are the cutiest silkie and mille fleur babies. I got the hand sanitizer right beside them so I can feel safe and cuddle them at the same time.

Thank you for hosting the meet. This was my first and it was nice to meet some of the other members and add to my little flock.

Eqyptian Fayoumis is what that lady said she had. I don't think she is on BYC. Here's a pic of a hen

What other birds did you buy - out of curiosity.......

The lady who had the Fayoumis also had the Gold Neck cock I didn't buy. Her birds seemed healthy while there. I know I looked the GN boy over very carefully and found no mites or other health issues. I suspect her birds are cage-reared and never see the ground. The GN had some outrageously long nails.
On the other side of the coin, I know she goes to quite a few shows, and had been to one the day before Sarah's.

Glad the babies are away from the sneezy birds. Hopefully the sneezing will clear up quickly.

I got the babies from you who are in a nice secluded from the other chickens area ( right beside my bedroom door, yes my husband is patient) I got 3 from the lady who had a TON of birds. I think she is in one of the pics on here.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/2952_100_7635.jpg In the grey shirt. I got 3 from her ( a RIR and 2 EE's) that are in another quarantine area that formerly belonged to my teenagers. I have the 3 black hens that are in a newly build quarantine cage that has been moved even further away than the garden. They are now chilling beneath a huge blueberry and japanese maple. The garden location was really only giving a few feet of total separation. I am a nervous person. My husband is good about building me portable coops and such on the spur of the moment. Luckily we had all the materials at hand and he had me an extra coop done in less than an hour.

The babies I think are very safe. They didn't even ride near the other birds. I had them in the front with me. I have taken the step of not allowing the kids near the black ones or any of the other new ones if they want to be around their babies which they do. Lots of hand washing and sanitizer being used atm.

I probably got carried away. I usually do. I am enjoy my chickens a bit too much and I do love variety. The egyptian was for my son. You remember how persistent they can be. Yea he hounded and hounded till I gave in.

I don't know if the sneezy will clear up. I took away the antibiotics immediately per speckleds ad. They are eating and active but still sneezing and the comb is now purple tipped. They looked so healthy when I got them. How that turned around this fast I don't know. No mites that I could see. The look healthy. No discharge. No odd sounds at the time. Poop looked fine and they had clean bums. I just teaches me early on how important all the lectures on quarantine are. Might be safest to just buy from people on here or that I know personally.

To clarify since in reading this is does sound confusing. I got 5 baby silkie and mille fluer's. I got 3 teenagers from the lady in the grey shirt with the short hair in the pic https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/upload/2952_100_7635.jpg
I
got 3 adult black hens from the lady with the goats these are the sneezing ones, and I got the 1 egyptian than my son insisted on. summary I bought 3 too many birds

NO! HL is talking about the black ones from the lady with the goats! I misread the post and asked for clarification. I must still be tired form yesterday cause it was all running together!!

I am concerned that the birds may be having heart trouble. Maybe HL could post it the disease section and ask for advice from people more knowledgeable. My "chicken bible" says it's age related/heart related problems based on the symptoms.

Heather...first let me say that I totally agree with speckledhen's advice about the antibiotics...you want to make sure you see all the things going on with them and antibiotics could easily mask a symptom you need to know about. It is of the utmost importance that you see everything going on because only then can you determine what to do and when to do it.

Those 3 sneezy girls...I will say this in the possible defense of the woman who sold them to you or any seller. Yesterday was a bad day for the birds...first they went through high humidty, then rain then intense heat and humidty, high winds and then as I understand it....without water for an unknown length of time because their waterer was empty. Those poor girls could have easily gotten dehydrated and suffer slight heat stroke...not to mention with the wind, anythign can get blown around and end up in their noses to causes sneezing...plus they went through the stress of being caged and traveling and in a new environment.

Give them some time and watch them...chickens sneeze normally and does not mean illness...they get water up their noses, dust & dirt, new smells etc. Watch for discharge from the nose or eyes, bad poo, eating and drinking issues, lethargic etc etc. I really suspect the will be fine given the proper care and nutrition during their quarantine.

Sarah now don't you be mean to James Bond.

Chy told you all he was being a butthead to that sweet cochin, which by the way is a doll baby. Just love her too pieces.

Lori, I am glad you did not get that GN even though he was clean and bug free so to speak...he needed some love and good feeding to whip him back into shape plus quarantine.

No no yours are doing well and are dealing with quarantine well enough. ( they want to run something fierce) They got one of the nice new separation coops my hubby built. I think the red one would rather be held though. The EE's don't want to be held at all I think they want to run in the grass and garden. Hopefully in a few weeks they can be roaming through the potatoes eating bugs. She still is the prettiest gal. Such a dark shiny red.

I don't think the seller knowingly sold sick birds. She seemed nice and upfront. I am more worried that she had several other birds and if this is something that spreads she could be wiped out if she doesn't know to watch out for this. I prefer to assume good intentions in everyone. I am really really hoping its just the heat.

They are getting everything I can think of to help them get over the head and such from yesterday. I have them very far away from the others so I think I have the time to watch and see whats going on before doing anything drastic. They are eating wonderfully and drinking plenty still. The head thing they stopped doing and they only did it while drinking so maybe they had chicken dry mouth or something? They are staying in the shade under the cherry for now. Lots of feed, some scrambled egg and oats for a treat. I have speckled's advise in mind though. I would rather deal with that on these 3 than all of them.

Hope its not the heart because there is nothing I can do for that. I had one less than a year drop recently. No symptoms. He was fine and in full use of his roo capabilities and and a few hours later he had a purple comb and died. It happens.
