Is the Soul Immortal?

Again, let us start with prayer. Heavenly Father, please guide our hearts and minds as we seek truth from the study of Your Word. We want to know the truth about You, to know You better so we may love You more and serve You better in Spirit and in truth. Please guide us as we study. We thank You, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Okay, let's start with the creation of mankind. For that we go, of course, to Genesis. In Genesis chapter 1 we read that God created the heavens, earth and seas and everything in them in six literal 24-hour days. How do we know this? Because in each case the record states, "and the evening and the morning were the (first, second, third, fourth, etc.) day." Each day had an evening, which came first, followed by a morning. Each day begins at sunset. (More on this at a later date.)

Why not at midnight as we keep time now? Because we're asleep then. You can't greet the new day when you're snoring. Same with dawn. Most of us are not awake to greet the new day at dawn. So God celebrates the change of day at sunset.

God was not doing all this creating just for fun, although I'm sure it was fun for Him. Have you ever gotten a new puppy or other pet? Or ever had a baby? Didn't you do lots of preparing for the new arrival? Building, painting, buying new clothes, a crib, a car seat, diapers? Or a leash, food bowls, a blanket? Whether it's for chickens, a fish or a hamster, there are all sorts of preparations to be made. Well, God made a whole world just for us! The atmosphere had to be just right so we could breathe. Gravity is kind of a big deal, to hold us and that atmosphere in place. He set up that whole water cycle system. You know, so the oceans evaporate and we have rain and never really run out of water and all that. Then there's plant life, which sustains the animal life. You know, how it all works together in one perfect, harmonious whole. That's pretty amazing. And all by the power of His word.

But then came the sixth day. All was complete. God is ready to place His crowning work of creation in the Garden. Does He speak this life into existence, as He has everything else? Let's go to Genesis 2:7.

Genesis 2:7 KJV
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

No, God does something different here. We imagine God on His knees here, like a Potter, gathering clay. We see Him forming something from the very elements of the earth itself. It takes shape, but it is not alive. He bends down and breathes His own life-force into its nostrils. A change takes place. It breathes. It looks into the face of its Maker. It smiles with intelligence, recognition and love. It is alive. It is Human. God calls it Adam. That which was not alive, now is. Scripture tells us, "and man became a living soul."

This is significant. When God put body (dust) and breath (ruach, spirit) together, a living soul was formed. God did not put a soul into the body. When the body stops breathing, the soul no longer exists. (Don't panic, God puts them back together again in the resurrection; that's another study!)

Could man live forever? Yes! It was God's intention and plan for this to be so. Provision was made for mankind to live forever, but it was conditional. It was based upon obedience. Man had to choose. God provided the Tree of Life, from which Man could eat and live forever, but there was another tree as well. This was the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. We all know how the story went. Satan deceived Eve, she ate, and then persuaded her husband to join her in disobedience. They gave their loyalty to the Liar - the one who said, in essence, "You can't trust the One Who provided you with everything you have and could ever possibly need or want. He's holding out on you. You won't really die. Obey me instead and your life will be so much better. You will be like gods!"

Sadly, man has believed this ever since. But Satan is "the father of lies." John 8:44. (Obviously their lives did not get better. Death, pain and suffering were the result.)

Does this mean man could also die? Again, yes. God said so. Death is the consequence of disobedience, because sin separates us from God, Who is the giver of life. Notice it was not God who first separated Himself from sinful Man, but the sinful couple who hid from God. Gen. 3:8. God came looking for them! God will always seek us, no matter how sinful we are! He never stops loving us. ❤

But God, in His mercy, could not allow Man to live forever. So He sent Man out of Eden and blocked access to the Tree of Life. How grateful we should be that this is so! Imagine if we could not die. What if we could suffer from cancer or heart disease, or any illness, without the possibility of the release that death brings? Death, in our fallen state, is a blessing.

But can the soul die? Scripture says yes.

Ezekiel 18:4 KJV
Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

See also v. 20. I know this is getting long but let me give this illustration. Take a pile of little boards and a pile of nails. Put them together to make a box. Now separate them into two piles, boards and nails and ask yourself, Where did the box go? People ask, where does the soul go when a person dies? Well, where did the box go? It didn't GO anywhere, it just no longer exists. You can put it back together again, or make a new box if you like. When the breath leaves the body at death, the "soul," or person, ceases to exist.

Do we have any consciousness in death? The Bible says no:
Ecclesiastes 9:5 KJV
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

The good news is, when Jesus returns, He will wake us up and give us new bodies, immortal and incorruptible. 1 Cor. 15: 51-55. This is a gift He will give to the saved, those who accept His salvation in Christ Jesus (John 3:16, 17, etc.) Until then, only God has immortality. 1 Tim. 6:16.

As always, thanks for reading. Comments and/or questions welcomed.

Death and The Lake of Fire

So we have seen that Man, or human beings, are not naturally immortal, and that the soul can actually die. But when does this take place?

Heavenly Father, please continue to guide us in our study and lead us into all truth. Give us clear vision and open hearts so that we may learn from Your Word, we ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

When His friend Lazarus died, Jesus called death a "sleep." John 11:11. Many times we see this in Scripture. Psalm 13:3, 1 Kings 2:10, 11:43, Luke 8:52, etc. There are literally dozens of texts that say, "and (name) slept with his fathers," meaning he died. Death was understood to be an unconscious sleep during which we wait for the resurrection at the Second Coming of Christ.

What happens when we die? Does the Bible teach that we pass immediately to our reward? Do we slip into heavenly bliss if we are saved, and fall into the "other place" if we blew it? What saith the Scripture?

1 Corinthians 15:51 KJV
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

We are not changed until the final trumpet sounds. When does this happen?

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 KJV
But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. [15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (precede) them which are asleep. [16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: [17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

What happens when Jesus comes?
John 5:28-29 KJV
Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, [29] And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Notice that nobody is already in heaven or hell when Jesus comes. He calls them up from their graves! But look what we are told in Revelation:

Revelation 22:12 KJV
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

When He comes, He is ready to separate the sheep from the goats, or the saved from the lost. How is this possible? Simple. Judgment will have ALREADY TAKEN PLACE before He comes! In fact (are you sitting down?), judgment is going on NOW. Listen:

Revelation 14:6-7 KJV
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, [7] Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

So we saw, from Thessalonians, that the righteous will go to heaven with Jesus when He comes. What about the unsaved? What happens to them?

Revelation 20:14-15 KJV
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

You can see more about this lake of fire in Chapter 20, v. 10, and ch 19:20. But this fire ultimately goes out.

Malachi 4:1 KJV
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

In fact, the fire shall go out and the ashes shall cool.

Malachi 4:3 KJV
And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.

The fire burns until the wicked are all burned up and there is nothing left to burn. There shall be nothing left of them but smoke.

Psalm 37:20 KJV
But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

The wicked shall totally cease to exist. They will not be shrieking in torment in some corner of the universe throughout the ceaseless ages, for we are told:

Revelation 21:4 KJV
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Destroying the wicked is God's "strange act." Isa. 28:21.

Ezekiel 33:11 KJV
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

It is only to secure the safety and security of His kingdom and its inhabitants that God ultimately must put an end to evil. And in His infinite mercy, He destroys both sin and unrepentant sinners. They would not be happy serving Him. He does not force them. He accepts their choice. To be in His presence would be torment to them. They are destroyed, Scripture tells us, by the very brightness of His purity. Remember that every individual has a choice. God does not arbitrarily destroy anyone. We make our own decision, to serve Him, or to reject Him. In the lake of fire the wicked are forever destroyed. The punishMENT is eternal, not the punishING. Even in judgment, God is merciful to sinners. God is love.

I hope you found this interesting.

Again, questions, comments welcomed! Thank you for reading.

So I know that what I've been sharing is probably very new to everybody. I know you all won't just take my word for it. But I do hope you will look up the Scriptures I shared, and study them with an open mind. Think about what Isaiah says about how we must study:

Isaiah 28:10 KJV
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

The Word of God is a cohesive whole. Taken together, it makes perfect sense. I know there are Scriptures that talk about unquenchable fire. We can look at those as well and see how those fit into this picture. God does not contradict Himself.

@BigBlueHen53 — I really enjoyed your studies. I have come to those conclusions before but reading it all organized solidifies everything much better for me.

So is our soul and God’s Holy Spirit different? What God breathed into Adam’s nostrils wasn’t His Holy Spirit then correct?

I know burning in the lake of fire won’t be for eternity but it won’t be a few seconds either. I’m curious how long it will be since in Revelation it says the AC and False Prophet are in there for 1,000 years and still burning when Satan gets thrown in there 😬 of course they’re not human I don’t think, at least Satan isn’t.

Thank you again for the feedback! And for the great questions. I don't profess to have all the answers but isn't it fun to study together?

To start with your first question:

So is our soul and God’s Holy Spirit different? What God breathed into Adam’s nostrils wasn’t His Holy Spirit then correct?

Correct, think "soul" = "person," or "living being." God's Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead. We see all Three in a couple of places throughout Scripture. One is at Jesus' baptism. Jesus, God Incarnate, or God in human form, comes up out of the water. A Voice is heard speaking from heaven saying, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased." (This is how we know the relationship between the two is represented as Father and Son.) And at the same time the Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove, signifying that power was bestowed upon Him authorizing Him to begin His ministry. Thus He was able from that point forward to heal the sick, raise the dead, proclaim liberty to the captives of Satan and so forth.

What God breathed into Adam was the "breath of life," the activating breath that is the difference between a living being and a dead one. Animals have this same breath of life, actually. See Ecclesiastes 3:19. It is not the Holy Spirit because even the most vile, unrepentant sinner lives and breathes.

The questions contained in your last paragraph are going to require another study, lol! Which I won't do here tonight. But briefly, I can say No, Satan is not human. He is an angel, though fallen. "There was war in heaven ..." Rev. 12:7. Once called Lucifer, Son of the Morning, he became Satan, the Enemy. He was banished from heaven and came here, to earth, where he deceived our parents and took control of our planet. But Jesus came to redeem us, or buy us back.

Man was made "a little lower" than the angels. We are a different order of being than angels, just as horses, for example, are different from humans. Jesus said angels do not marry. They have special powers and are usually invisible to our eyes. But they are extremely powerful. A single one slew 185,000 soldiers once! 2 Kings 19:35.

How long will the wicked burn? Until they are all burned up. See Luke 12:45-48. Some will certainly receive more punishment than others, because God is just. But Satan will receive the greatest punishment of all. Malachi 4:1-3 repeatedly uses the term "day" when speaking of this event. A day with the Lord could be as much as a thousand years. But I trust the Lord to be both merciful and just, don't you? ❤

May I ask where you see in Scripture that the antichrist and false prophet are burning during the 1,000 years? I seem to have missed that somehow! Thanks!

I know the book of Revelation isn’t all in chronological order nor have I studied it recently or too in depth, but if Chapter 19 & 20 are in chronological order then the beast & false prophet were in the lake of fire for 1,000 years (if in fact 1,000 years are literal years.)

Revelation 19:20 KJV
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Revelation 20:3 KJV
And cast him [Satan] into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Revelation 20:10 KJV
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Thank you! You have sparked an interest of studying more.

I go through phases of reading and studying the Bible every waking minute literally for weeks on end. Then bam I don’t even open or touch my Bible for another few weeks until something catches my attention or until I force myself to study again and get the love of studying. It’s an ongoing cycle.

So at least now I have the interest and desire to start back up.

That's why we need a thread like this, and/or church study groups. "Steel sharpens steel." We keep each other sharp. I have a special love of studying with people who DON'T think like I do. It forces me to study, to research, to dig deep in the Word, and then to share. Please keep those questions coming! Challenge me. If I'm wrong, I want to know it!
