Losing a parent is always awful, but, based on my experience, you are given this time for a reason. Having a loved one with a terminal illness is horrible, the only blessing is having the time to say goodbye and make peace in your own heart.
Last fall, I lost my father and my grandfather four days apart. My dad died completely out of the blue, and it was like being hit in the face with a sledgehammer.
My grandfather, on the other hand, had been sick for a long time.
I'm not saying I miss him less by any means, but I cherish the time we had to say goodbye, and I am thankful that my immediate family and I were there when he passed. We all held hands and prayed together, he told us he loved us, and then he went to sleep and very gently passed on.
I will pray for your FIL's recovery.
If you know that is not a possibility, remember that even in our darkest moments God loves us!
