Pre-K class wants to know what kind these are

ok back to a take y'er chances pick then?

wahh..I was hoping we'd be able to at least figure out what a few of the breeds were!!

darn it!

They said the U of I (University of IL) extension office provided them w/the eggs/incuabator..
for free...which is great for them..but not me..cause they made no statements on what they were or
could possibly be

If you don't want roos, I would just assume 50/50, take twice as many as you want and list the roos on craigslist once you're sure which ones they are.

Thanks...seems like roos are everywhere here ugh!

to be given away Free on CL!

or I could (insert evil laugh)..wait a few weeks; see what you all think and then the suspected roos; hand over to my BIL/SIL who want some! LOL

Now, just post a pic of the wing feathers...

I too teach a class of pre-k. Montessori with mixed ages from 3-6. We are fortunate enough to keep our hens at school where the children can care for them daily. I have found that the best way to ensure you are getting hens is to order them from a reputable hatchery. Then once you have the hens, seek out a rooster to breed them with. You will probably always end up with a roo or two but in our case we found a local vineyard that has a "petting zoo" that is happy to take them. I've always tried to pick unique breeds that no mater if it a hen or roo people find them interesting...silkies, cochins, auracanas. Below are a few pics. Hope you enjoy and have fun with your babies.

these eggs didnt come from a hatchery unfortunately; it came from the University of IL extension office (teaches farm stuff & outreach programs)...

The chick in the 2nd looks like my Poop Face did. I've been told she is some kind of partridge. Here's when she was a few days old and now.

I love her! She is so funny. And VERY protective of the baby.

i've heard you can feather sex any breed

this video is helpful with feather sexing-

As stated earlier you have to breed a Fast Feathering breed (male) to a Slow Feathering breed (female) to create a offspring that can be Feather Sexed.
Example-
Leghorn Male x Rhode Island Red Female,
Dominique Male x Barred Rock Female,
Ancona Male x Sussex Female

Here is a very good post by tadkerson on the 3 "main" Sex-link types (Red, Black and Feather).
