Pre-ordering for spring chicks

I ordered thru Meyer - i had originally placed my order with MPC, but heard that they got their chicks from Meyer. I paid $10 to cancel my MPC order, and still saved $20 or so on my order by going directly thru Meyer. On my 15 chicks, their sexing was 100% accurate, all females. I had one chick die in tthe first week, but everyone else is healthy.

I ordered from MPC again- very satisfied with quality of chicks. 100 % sexing accuracy. Chicks were healthy, and grew up to be very pretty birds. Their hatch date was July 4th. My min order was four, I'm in the suburbs. The new chickies (Sultans, Marans) are coming in May.

The only online hatchery I use is Ideal. They do not have a minimum chick order - they only have a minimum dollar order of $25. It is by far the cheapest way to buy chicks over the internet. MPC, Meyer, and a few others do offer only a three chick minimum, but their packing and shipping charges for those small orders is very high - those cost alone will probably be more than the cost of the chicks you order. Of course, it is convenient for many people who only want a few chicks and don't mind paying the additional costs.

Shipping probably increases the farther away from whatever hatchery one uses. Meyer is in my state (Ohio) so I use them and am very satisfied. I have heard that Ideal will ship extras roos to keep others warm unless you specify no extras. Most of these hatcheries are listed online and provide the specifics of their policies if you look them up. Chickensforbackyards is another one that ships small numbers.

I just ordered my chicks from Meyer the other day. I ordered some last fall and was very happy with the chicks. They carry breeds that seem hard to find at other hatcheries. I paid a ridiculous amount for shipping the last time, and have since discovered that the hatchery is only 45 minutes from my parents in Ohio. I'm planning a visit to them to that weekend and will drive my chicks back to Indiana that Monday. (No, I don't think I'll save any money that way, but it sure sounds fun!

My favorite is Mount Healthy. Most of their breeds have a 15 chick limit and are probably the best quality hatchery birds you can get. It makes it much easier if you can find someone to split an order with. My second choice would probably be Meyer due to choice of breeds and cheap prices. They have a 25 bird limit. I dont have experience with "Ideal". IMPO I would never order from MPC. youll pay as much for 10 as you would for 25 from Meyer and thats where they came from to begin with. If you are going to pay the same money anyway for the privilege of a small order, then I would rather get 15 from Mt. Healthy and just give the extras away.

Edited for.... the last order I had from Meyer was 26 chicks of differing breeds and it was 58.00 plus 14.50 in shipping

I have ordered from Mount Healthy and they will do small orders for pick up only. Always had healthy chickens. I have also ordered from Eagles Nest in Northern Ohio. I ordered from Ideals last spring and had nothing but problems. I recieved chicks that were not the correct birds and lost a couple. I also had one that never grew correctly and now is paralyzed. I hope that is not the norm for that hatchery. I won't be ordering from them again. Two of my roosters had split wings so I can't use them for breeding and that is why I bought them.

I think someone already said this....but Meyer Hatchery has a 3 chick min. but you pay more for shipping the less chicks you have ordered. I will be ordering from Meyers tonight!
