I've read a lot of posts on this subject in trying to protect my flock (yet to arrive).
I'm passionate of wildlife, I practice 'safe' catch and release, and only kill what I'm going to eat.

PLEASE understand I mean no insult and I'm not 'telling' you what to do!
We're here for the same reason..learn/grow and pass on our experiences.
I only post this to save some grief/aggravation and a LOT OF MONEY!

POSTING ILLEGAL ACTIVITY ON THE WWW ... well, it's just evidence in the eyes of the law!
How do I know "they're watching"?
One of the most highly decorated Vietnam Vets in NC has a Federal rap on his 'resume'.
Without going into details, caught posting (although legal) activity on a web forum.....he didn't have the Specific Federal License
Lost everything...either through property seizure, house, and it's contents, cars, trucks EVERYTHING!
What was not seized, he sold to fund his defense!

I've lived, and/or hunted/fished in over a dozen states from Maine to Florida.
ALL the LAWS are very similar.

I might be wrong so check the laws in your state and Native Americans MIGHT be exempt from some laws!

Transporting wild animals is illegal IN ANY STATE. Without a specific license to do so!
EVEN DEAD animals/birds OR the feathers/pelts/body parts.
This is to protect wildlife...so you don't pass a possible rabid animal to another area, introduce an 'invasive species', or 'posses' endangered species.

Trapping/hunting OUT of SEASON is illegal in ANY state.

If caught, they can also take your car/truck/boat/RV/ATV any vehicle that is caught in the process.
Along with any guns/fishing gear, trapping equipment etc, with anything ATTACHED to that vehicle, kayak/canoe, boat/trailer or camper!
You will need a lawyer to get it back!

SOME states allow specific actions in the case for the protection of live stock.
From what I've read, only a few states allow poison!

To the poster that trapped and transported a fox, just because you called F&G and they "told' you where to drop it off, does not make it OK.
It is illegal to trap and transport wild animals without the specific license. PERIOD!.

READ THE LAWS IN YOUR STATE!!
Do what you have to do to protect your flock/family.
Be smart with posting!

Thank you for this post. I get incensed when I read of people who either don't want to keep their birds secure "they won't like it if I put them in a run... they'd rather free range" or who blame the predators when they don't have the proper security in place. Predatory animals do what is natural. They cannot go to the local McD's and grab a burger. Deciding to kill birds of prey, to heck with the law...or to take an animal from one spot to another...or to lay out poison hither thither and yon to kill those pesky animals.... Really??

Security is our friend. Fence it, cover it, use electricity, get a yappy dog even, to hang out in your yard. Close your birds up, check and double check.

We are not above the law simply because we keep pet birds...or livestock. If your state allows for predator control, follow the rules they impose. Don't make up your own and pretend it won't come back on you. Make sure you are not doing anything which is going to come back to bite you in the rear, and for sure, do not scream it from the rooftops on a public internet forum.

As bad as we might think it, laws are there to protect us and wildlife.

Unfortunately, if you post a nude or nearly nude photo of your new grand baby on Face Book, it could be construed as child pornography!
Unfortunately, it will cost a small fortune to 'prove your innocence' .

Fortunately the pedophile has no place to hide!

I would hate to hear of a fellow poster lose their "Pondarosa" because of their actions out of 'ignorance'.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
But if someone boasted about it... I feel little for them.

The WWW is informing us with an un-believable amount of info...it is also used to catch people too!

Good advice.

Some of this is already mentioned in the sticky at the top of Predators & Pests:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/5808/predators-and-pests-forum-please-read-here-first

It would be advisable to read there first before posting a thread or replying to one in this section.

Part of that sticky note which contains the rules of P&P says:

And there is a link to this thread as well:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/113482/legal-elimination-of-hawks-and-owls

We do NOT want to get into a debate on free ranging or penning birds in this thread. That always ends in a verbal altercation.
