I did hardware cloth apron that goes about 2ft out. I also use chemical deterrents like predator pee. I put those little blinky red lights out too about fox height. There's tons of coyotes by me but I've never seen sings of them coming up near my house or barn. I've never seen signs of anything digging by my duckies pen. That I lock them up at night helps a lot and my hut for them had a wood floor so nothing can dig in.
I put carabineers on the latches so racoons have a harder time figuring it out.
The only concern I ever had was one sickly mangy fox that came up to the pen in the middle of the day and watching my duckies thinking about getting in. That problem was solved quickly.
My biggest concern now is when I let them free range I stay near them Incase hawks start getting ideas.
