predator took one leg

I have never had a chicken lose a leg but have had one that got the top of her head and neck torn off. You could see all her insides moving, even her brain was exposed. I kepted it cleaned, used neosprin and kept her isolated. Needless to say she not only grew the skin back but also grow the feathers back. 100% recovery.

Thanks Lacy. KandiandJerry ---I'm close to you, sort of, in Mid Tn. I'm in Ashland City, Cheatham County.

Well, not as bad as I first thought. The amputation is not quite near his main body as I first thought - It's above the knee. He still has about 2 inches of upper leg -- looks like he was chewed pretty good at the knee. covered the area in Neosporin -- I hope that doesn't make him too cold or wet; Made him some scrambled eggs with shells -- he ate two bites.

Will let you know soon. thanks, all you guys.

I see that 1/2 a baby asprin was suggested. I would advise against asprin as it thins the blood. Of course after the wound is closed, there will be no need. Don`t give the bird asprin. Like others have said, the stub will heal and the bird will cope. Just watch for infection or maggots......Pop

And I hope your bird makes it!! You've got a stronger drive for hope than I do, I would've done otherwise; poor bird!!

Yeah that is not too far away from us.....I would keep him on the chick starter.....he must be tough to make it thru all of that stress of having his leg chewed off.....I think he will make it....as long as infection doesn't set in...have you thought of shooting him up with antibiotics as a preventative....just a thought....the blue kote horse medicine is also great for wounds.....

I second the motion for Blue Kote as I have used it on my quail when they started pecking each other so badly, their skulls were exposed and one spray healed it right up within one day. Also, when I get an injured bird and put it into the crate, I throw a large towel over it to keep the sides and back dark and to help the bird relax. I don't know if this helps or not. What kind of bedding do you have in the crate?

He made it through the night. I brought him back in the house to a bigger box with a carpet pad. He's partially wrapped in a towel. He doesn't complain at all. I can tell he ate a bit during the night.

BlueKote -- can I get this at Tractor Supply? Also -- the smell -- of blood. His leg is smelly. How do I keep maggots from setting in his leg?
