predator took one leg

Sad to report that when I came home this evening, he had expired. I'm really not sure why -- he managed at least 12 hours (that I know of -- and much longer -- not bleeding out). He ate last night and he was alert this morning.

I'm thinking of starting a new thread about loss versus budget (how much did you spend on your chicken housing & run, how long do your chickens free range, is this something you went into hoping to save them all, or is loss a normal part of your experience, etc.). Do you guys think a thread like that would be welcomed?

I think you'll find loss is a normal part of chicken keeping...we just do what we can to minimize it. I built my pens of harware cloth on all four sides and the top with aprons around the edges and made sure there were no cracks even the smallest thing can get through but who knows? Is it enough? Time will tell but I also free range during the day which increases the chances of loss. So far the only hen I lost was due to something within her. She went blind, became egg bound and then developed vent gleet....did all I could and still lost her. I'm sorry you lost your rooster. It could have been from shock.
