Wisdom is telling me to bite my tongue, but THIS post is the one that’s bringing me back from lurking for two whole years.
Hi there, future vet student here. Worked in two vet clinics and volunteered at several shelters. Extreme adoption advocate with several ex-strays to show for it.
With that being said, the two posters shaming the OP for this thread are making me sick to my stomach. YOU are what gives “crazy animal people” a bad name. I’ve assisted in spaying pregnant dogs, I’ve seen an entire litter of kittens and beautiful healthy dogs euthanized because there was no more room in the kennels and no fosters available. And all I can say is, it’s never black and white.
Yes, adopting out shelter cats would be much better than letting a barn cat have her litter. But this isn’t your damn cat, and those aren’t your damn kittens. Who are you two to tell someone they should kill the litter, without knowing any health background of the cat, vet opinions, homes lined up, and owner’s viewpoints on the matter. Yes, there is a HUGE canine and feline population problem in the US right now. I was nearly in tears talking to my husband about this recently. But shaming people like this is truly disgusting. It does not enlighten, it does not encourage, all it does is want people to have absolutely nothing to do with the movement that’s needs to be happening. You’re putting a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.
I rolled my eyes when I read the first post, but after seeing where OP is at I have a huge amount of respect for them. How dare you criticize a caring owner who is making up for a mistake and planning for the future.
Kudos to you OP, very few people give a crap about their barn cats and even less would line up homes. On top of that, I have never heard of anyone willing to pay to fix an entire unplanned litter. Your choice is entirely justified, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. And please don’t delete this thread, I personally think you are a shining example of a good owner.
And as for your cat, I would personally keep her contained until you can spay her. She will do just fine having them, them barn cats are TUFF. But you already know that.
