Hi. My 4 month old (exactly) chicken just laid her first egg, and I don't really know what to do with it. I've read that chicken eggs, if they aren't washed, don't have to be refrigerated. I'm wondering what's the best choice as to preserving the eggs/keeping them until they are eaten.

Do different methods allow them to be kept longer than others? Do certain methods cause different tastes/characteristics in the eggs?

Thanks,
From a new flock owner.

If you don't refrigerate eggs they stay good for about a week. In the fridge they're good for around 1-2 months. It's best to not wash the eggs as that removed the bloom (protective coating) which keeps bacteria out

I refrigerate eggs even if the are not washed, just to make sure they do not spoil, the taste of the egg depends on what you feed your chicken.

Same here..I don't wash them and they go straight into the fridge.

Congrats on your very first egg! How exciting!

Thanks everyone! I put the eggs in the fridge, as well as the 2 other eggs I got the following days. I hope to get another today (I saw her sitting on the nest, but I don't think she has laid yet) :)
