Pretty sure a raccoon tried to eat my duck through enclosure (graphic)

If I can keep infection out, do you think that the wound may heal? Really hoping so as my ducks are pets to me.

Yes ignore will heal and look okay, but it might always be broken/fractured and possibly become uncomfortable if she is ever mated. But I have a male Muscovy that broke his wing in a fight with another male and after some time the bone reset ( not in the same place) so it is technically not broken anymore. It it doesn't cause discomfort unless he does try to fly. She should be fine as long as she is kept clean.

Also what I read from your plan design enclosure is an aviary, I keep all of my birds in aviaries other than the muscovies. You have to be so critical in the building if there is any speculation that something might be able to get in, it for sure will find a way in. You have to be very careful and just be sure nothing can get in. I welded metal hardware cloth and chain link into wood to make a tight and secure place for my birds :).

Also I recommend that when you build it you go over what you think is enough room to be sure that it can stay nice and clean. Aviaries also take a lot of work cleaning and maintains to stay looking nice. But it is totally worth it. What I do for cleaning is I stop in December becuase leaves willing stop falling till march so I just let it all be natural until March, then I remove the ducks place them in a temporary enclosure then sweep away leaves, cut away overgrowth and drain the pond and refill it ( which is usually a weekly thing anyway). Also I have water soaking plants planted near the pool so that it won't turn into a giant mud puddle.

What a pretty girl! I've seen some pretty bad wounds heal, so it's definitely possible. Given how her wing looks, though, she may not recover normal use of it, but you likely know that already. Only time will tell...:fl

Best wishes for your duck's recovery.

Foodfreedom, sorry my reply had come off wrong. The tone in my head was one that was supposed to relay that I was encouraged by your response. I am pretty sure her wing will not function correctly if she can survive the wound. I am mainly wrapping it bc it seemed more comfortable for her and that I may be able to save some function to it.

I also wanted to thank everybody for their input, advice, and encouragement. I was really starting to lose hope. I just got home from work so about to do wound care. I will weigh her tonight as well and contact casportpony to see about dosage of antibiotic. I do think she is getting depressed about being isolated bc she only drinks and eats when I sit there with her or hand feed her.

Not looking very promising and she has a slight shiver. Either from pain or she is becoming septic. I wish she were lethargic or gave me a definitive sign so I could make "the" decision easier. As long as she is willing to fight and isn't suffering badly then I suppose I can't give up on her. She is still pretty vibrant when I get her out and will scarf down treats offered (peas, lettuce/greens, and grapes bc they are her favorite). Plan on asking my dog's vet tomorrow to see if they would be willing to amputate her wing and if so how much it will cost. I doubt they would do it and if so at a reasonable price, but never hurts to ask. I feel ridiculous that I am even contemplating it but... can't help myself.

No worries - we all all know the difficulties email communication presents.

I just didn't want to squash hope!

I approach these decisions the same way: what's the prognosis (good quality of life likely?) and is there an unreasonable amount of suffering? To me, the sign that an animal has given up is when they stop eating...and your girl is still eating, so she's got some fight left in her.

I don't think it hurts to ask, either - and maybe the vet will have another treatment recommendation. Sometimes the healing process takes a lot longer than we think, and the patient can have ups and downs. Will be sending positive energy your way.

Heads up avian surgery costs ALOT!!!! Easy 2000 dollars just for a nutering. I think if you just give her time and keep cleaning it daily it should heal, be sure to let the wound get some air alittle bit everyday ( like when your changing bandages and cleaning it, let it stay out for a few minutes before bandaging it up again with neosporine)

She actually seemed a bit better this morning/afternoon. Wasn't as hot to the touch and less "shivering". Still eating hand fed treats and drinking water when I sit with her. Wound is about the same. Honestly I'm not sure how a wound like hers should heal. I'm not seeing or smelling anything yet that I am concerned about. After her bath tonight and vetericyn cleanse I'll take a picture. Going to let her hang out and air dry for a bit. Wish my dog didn't upset her. He pays her no mind (14yrs old, blind and almost deaf) but when I have to carry her by him she growls at him. Kind of makes me laugh every time.

It may not heal to where it looks like a normal wing but they sure are amazing in what they can heal from.
Good news she is eating good.
