Prices for eggs

I think people who come looking for fresh eggs already know they are a far superior product to what they get in the grocery store and they also know they are worth every penny of $3.00 a dozen when wally world is getting $1.89.
I think anyone who sells for a buck is not only hurting themselves but they are also hurting others who sell by keeping the expectation of a ridiculously low price alive and well.

You work hard to feed your chickens, clean their area, and care for them, and they work hard supplying you with their eggs, charge what they are worth and don't feel you are cheating someone just because you happen to enjoy what you are doing, the product is STILL worth the price, no matter how much fun it is getting it.

I'd throw eggs away before I'd sell them for a buck, selling for that would be a slap in the face to any self respecting hen.

Oh I don't know about that. My hens get more respect than you can imagine....it doesn't have to relate to the price of an egg. Markets and income vary, and alot of older people that need wholesome, nutrious eggs get them from me for free, and I assure you it's no slap in the face for anyone....except the egg industry raising caged hens that looses a sale!

I actually give my eggs away free too to people who I know that really can't afford much of anything, when I get too many (which isn't often anymore, although I still give away every 10th dozen).

I would like to point out a few things on feeding and selling eggs. This is not ment to start something but just some facts.

I you are buying feed, you are feeding mostly corn to your chickens. Which is what comercial growers do also. Now if your feed does not contain corn but still buy it is better. So look at what you feed contains.

Now the best way to advertize your eggs if you buy feed is as Fresh Eggs. As these have not been shipped and have been harvested with in a day or a few.

Free range chicken means not buying feed. So if you are buying some to supplement you chickens eggs are not free range totally. Pasture fed means chickens are out in a contain tractored that is moved or in a field. Most of these might be also supplmented with store bought feed, so that would be a option.

The reason I bring this up is things are getting tough on wording and someone might and I say might come after you for mislabling. Too many people like to sue for the stuipest reason. With so many city folk buying eggs and they being the ones that are sue happy it is best to cover yourself a bit with advertizing wording.

BTW if corn is what cost, so feed with it will cost more than feed with out it alot of times. Chickens do not need corn too live. Most comerial corn is not that great these days as it has been altered chemically. There are some comerical corn that were sold to farmers that had to be pulled because of the bad medical problems they were causing. If you read up on corn you will find out about this. Most corn is treated to grow and genetically altered to resit certain pest and diseases. Which is then absorbed into the kernals.

Corn is going up and up and up. I would suggest changing your feed if your is corn based for it will be cheaper.

Please be aware and not mislable your product for your own safty and pocket book. The end comsumer is getting more knowledable every day. Why take the chance of a possible law suite. You might say I never have heard of anyone getting sued and that might be your case. But it does not mean it has not or will not happen. People are greedy plain and simple and those that live in and around big cities are the worst for law suites.

I hope this helps. The goverment plans on getting more stringent on small producers. Do not use the term organic unless certified. Even Natural now has a organisation that has trade marked that term. So use fresh eggs if you buy feed or pasture do not use free range in your advertizing. Better safe than sorry if someone takes offense.

Again I am not trying to start something just trying to help protect yourself from greedy people.

WOW!!! I never even thought about the wording. I have always considered my eggs free ranged because they are out on their own when the weather is good and I don't keep them in cages. Thanks for brings this up. I wonder if some idiotic government worker will ever decide to "legislate" what the meaning of "fresh eggs" are?

Free range chicken means not buying feed

I would have to disagree with that statement. I do agree that pasture-fed and free range are two different things. Mine are not pasture-fed (no pasture), but they do freerange all day long. I do not label my eggs organic because of the USDA's stringent, and to me, stupid, rules about what "organic" is (stupid because they allow a certain amt of inorganic components to be included in foods labeled "organic"). Still, there is feed in their coop because in the winter, there is not enough for them to find to eat on their own to lay eggs. Just because they have feed when they go back to their coop does not mean that they are not freeranged chickens, IMO. It means they are healthier chickens than if they were just penned 24/7 and fed commercially prepared feed and only that.

Well, laws can be either state or local and the terms have not been really so defined. But according to deffinetion free range is no confinment of any type except at night. In other words no fencing in like a run or encolsed backyard. They call this yard ranging if there is a fence.

I did check after I wrote this again to make sure of the updates on terms. So if one free ranges but puts up at night, this is OK. As well as for those that live in harse winter areas that confine during that time but they are out when weather is good. Which would mean you have to feed some because of winter conditions or you have some feed in coop when they are put up for the night. This does not apply to those that have runs or backyards. As this is considered yard ranging.

The thing as I mention is to cover yourself from those consumers that are ignorant and spitfull enough to sue. An they do exsit. Because of the news and the wholesome food addicts there will be missunderstanding. Fresh eggs has no legal basis so you are covered on using that to make things easy. All your eggs are fresh even the store bought but We know that our eggs are truely fresh compared to store bought.
