Probably wrong, but thinking out loud about the TSC “BRs”

It's not outside the realm of possibility that they took some Grünlegers that had decent barring and crossed them into their BRs to improve something in their stock and simply selected to avoid the green/blue quality. As far as I know hatcheries work with a breed for several years before they're made available to the public, so considering that these EEs are newly listed, it's quite possible they brought them in years ago and used them both to enhance one of their BR lines and to develop an EE that would stand out from all the other hatchery EEs.

I thought it was common knowledge that barred rocks sold by hatcheries directly aren't real barred rocks, as well as a slew of other easy to replicate breeds. I once read a book on chickens that made special mention of barred rocks and how messed up their breed lineage is because of hatcheries.

Well yes, it's common knowledge that they're often mutts. The mystery here, is why chickens that look so different from the standard are being sold as BRs. Also, these chickens look rather different from anything we've seen before, so we're trying to figure out both the how and the why of them looking like that.

I dunno... I'm not really seeing any Legbar in the weird rocks. Sure, it would be easy to remove crests and blue eggs, but if the weird coloring was still there I'd expect something else from the Legbars to also be there. White ear lobe, gold coloring, and especially Legbar type. The rocks still have a very DP breed type, no sign of Legbar at all.

I wonder what the Legbars were crossed to make the Grünlegers. The coloring does look remarkably similar, so maybe a similar cross was done to the rocks.

The breed description just says Legbar x brown egg layer. But googling Grünlegers led me to a breed profile page that says they are Aracuna's mixed with native chicken breeds.

It's definitely possible.

The only way I can suggest to get real Barred Rocks is to buy heritage Barred rocks they breed to APA standards which is so different from what some of the hatcheries are doing today. Chickenslol is correct !
