PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

Can I ask what type of 'tea ball' ? I have only seen them in metal and they say metal is a no no when making kombucha.

The tea ball I use is a large round mesh ball with hinges for putting loose tea in and steeping tea in a tea pot. You can get one at a kitchen store. Yes they say no metal, but the ball is out before I put the new scoby in.

Shouldn't heat in the microwave-it kills the cultures. I you want to warm heat gently on the stove. Or just leave on the counter to warm up. Bread can go in before butter milk or kefir is added!

There is nothing wrong with wanting to give your chickies a nice warm belly of goodness!

I always put the cold, fresh, refrigerated milk in the microwave just barely long enough to get the chill off of it, just barely warm, before I pour it over the kefir grains to start the next day's kefir.

Joe,
Milk wasn't the problem, but buttermilk. The microwave kills the cultures in the cultured buttermilk. Warming gently on the stove will preserve the viability of your culture.
