I also get little chunky curds. I have been trying to culture them more recently, but haven't gotten anything like another grain yet. If you choose to try something, let me know how the experiment goes!

I'm not that far off from having to get one (sigh)

How long have you been growing your little curds? I want mine to start multiplying! I think the kefir babies might need a pep talk.

The little curd have been growing. I just keep eating them and saving my grain. I just thought recently that I should see if I can get some more big ones by letting them grow.

I am really excited. Finally i got an avatar!!! I feel like a big girl.!!

Ok, I have done some research and decided to order my Kefir Grains from the Kefir Lady. I'm sending out the request now, and hopefully I'll get my grains in a few days.

I'm just so excited to try this stuff. I'm hoping it will make me feel better and get my immune system and digestive system back on track. In the last year and a half, I've been sick and run down with every flu, virus, etc. etc..... You name it, I had it. I'm really hoping the Kefir will help to make me feel better and give me back the energy I lost from being so sick.

Thanks to all of you for posting this topic and helping out with questions, and especially for explaining everything in such an understandable way.

If you want your kefir grains to grow faster, add some boiled egg shells to the mix. The extra calcium really boosts them.

I would call who you ordered them from and have them send you more grains and not take a chance on them being contaminated from the shipping!!

Ernie

OH and not a problem on the help

I e mailed them and was told to go ahead and culture what I saved. They said that the good bacteria would counteract any bad bacteria that may have gotten mixed in. They were very polite but will not be replacing them. Now I don't know what to do. I know I won't drink the first batch or three. How will I know if it's alive, growing and safe?

Just sent you a PM about how to try and resolve your purchase for the grains!!

Ernie

Thanks Ernie, I will take your advice.

By the way, does anyone have a recipe for bread that uses kefir milk? I want to make a large batch, refrigerate it and cut pieces off to bake as needed. I would love a recipe that is tried and true so I don't have to experiment too much. My time is very limited because of my duties as caretaker for my 85 year old parents. Can anyone help?

This is all very interesting and great information. I think I will ask for one of those crocks for fermenting veggies next Christmas. I wish they weren't so pricey!!!

I currently have a Kombucha scoby that is growing... anyone want to trade for some kefir grains? I'm really interested in growing some kefir now! My daughter is allergic to diary, but I think my husband and I, plus the animals will warrant at least trying it!

I call the "curd" the little lumps in my kefir. They go easily through a stainer. The grain, however is bigger and more solid. At least that is how to differentiate.
