Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

I have similar issues with my step-son. His step-dad has been playing some zombie shooting game and now he's been obsessed with violence lately. He has such a hard time separating reality from fantasy as it is, so we avoid TV and too much games (especially violent ones).... the other day he's looking at the chicks and says "when they're big we're gonna stab them with a knife!" Egh... I tried to explain to him that's not quite how it works and they are killed carefully and quickly and no knives are used until they're already dead. He has not watched us dispatch a bird yet, he's only seen the plucked and eviscerated end result... I worry about that boy.

He's almost six, thinks time machines are real, he's Sonic the hedgehog and says things like "When I was an adult, you were my kid, daddy" and has false memories about his mom living in my house. I'm sure it's the age, but it's hard to have him understand what's real. Seems one has to shelter such a child from killing chickens, or he may try to butcher the cat next

He has a great imagination. Let him run with it. Priceless. He'll get the real world soon enough. A little more experience on "cull" day and he will understand.

Edited for content: Sorry I didn't read about the games or court problems. I was speaking about a 6 yr old with an active imagination. Is there a way to curtail a few games? Still he'll be a fine boy with good support behind him. Train him about nature and the difference in video games and life.

I just culled a hen that had repeatedly gotten into trouble laying an egg. She was deteriorating. I just feel sick about it.

I subscribed to this threat so I can find the courage/knowledge to cull & process; but hearing all your family stories has touched me! Let me introduce myself, I am Rochelle, moved to a small Victorian town with my hubby, off grid, in a semi converted barn, in the woods. We have a small mix breed flock, safe in a run, from all the predators.
Nice to meet everyone and yes, I too come from the "Land of Disfunction", and seek peace and happiness everyday.

I'm sorry... it just sucks when you have to cull a bird for medical, but it sounds like you definitely did the right thing for her. I guess when you raise them for meat it is always in the back of your mind that it will be the eventual end.... when they are one of your layers you just aren't prepared. (at least I know I am not when they are young hens)

Sorry you had to do it....

Sorry everyone for what you are going through, I am not look forward to my first kills in few weeks, I have been so busy with new babies and extra needs ones who didn't make it. Looked my two boys in the eye tonight and it is going to be hard even though they are meanies. Told my Mom we would eat them when they come visit and she said sure.... welcome newbie. I have one I call shim because I can't tell if it is a boy or girl. 4 1/2 months old and looks like boy one week and girl the next wish it would crow or lay an egg.:idunno

Got it done. Three done two more tomorrow. NH red roo is the size of a small Turkey! On left. Saving that for a weekend dinner. Currently making soup with roo #2. The tiny one was cut up and put in freezer to make stock, along with feet, necks, and gizzards. Yup I'm feeling farmer today. Took me about two hours.
