I have really enjoyed reading this

eggs go in the bator in the morning lol.

I really miss fried quail!

I do about the same way only thing is I don't pluck them . That is just not worth the time just cut the wings off then put your fingers in the hole of the skin and pull it off!

I always just broke their necks and plucked. Probably still have to (if I raise more) cause my wife won't let me do them in the house lol. I never did more then the killing and plucking but I was 12 I think when we raised them.

I know this is an old thread, but I found it yesterday and just finished reading the whole thing. The instructions were very useful in reassuring me that this is something I probably can do, and the responses were both amusing and useful as well. I'm currently planning to get a couple breeding sets of coturnix quail (jumbos) and want to know everything before I do. One thing I noticed very early into my study of quail raising is that it is highly addictive and, so, unless I want to end up becoming Happy Acres for Retired Fowl, I better mentally prepare myself for all aspects of raising them. (I'm also a bleeding heart and the conditions factory farmed animals live in make me very sad. Raising my own birds for meat, giving them a good life, NOT supporting the factory farm companies if I can avoid it, this seems like a better choice for me. Wish I could raise chickens, but chickens, along with clothes lines, are BANNED. Both are evil.)

I am rather fascinated with the aspect of raising quail. Any one care to enlighten me re: the benefits of raising quail for meat and eggs compared to chickens? How much meat will a single quail produce? Do most folks raise them just as a hobby, or actually for egg/meat production?

Actually dependsa on the Quail and the line
some Jumbos are not even close to being a real jumbo

Jamesmariefarms has some awesome meat and egg birds . I believe he not only sells hatching eggs but chicks as well.
the mans name is Robby and i highly suggest him as a place to buy as learning from him is worth its weight in gold
he is kinda hard to get ahold of due to health but you wont regret it once you do and the eggs i just put in my bator are the size of a bantam egg im expecting some 1 lb birds

chickens meat and eggs are not as much protien and minerals as Quail do a google on Quail Nurishment

I'm a big baby and not looking forward to doing this. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. Thanks for the explanation, pics, suggestion of wine first, and jokes. They all make it a bit easier to face.

I Lay birds on back, step on wings , then pull leggs. This one motion leaves you with a gutted, and skinned breast with wings. Never done this on farm raised birds, but this is how we've done it for 20yeRs in the field hunting.
