for you both

carrosaur I am heart broken. I can't begin to imagine how you are dealing with what has happened. There are tears in my eyes and I can't type but know that we are all here with you with love and our prayers. Spend the day giving extra attention to your other goose. Keep everyone safe.

Thanks jtn. Kiwi is standing a few feet from me silently. So sad.

When my goose was eggbound and died my gander defended her dead body when I found her. He never cared for me much still doesn't. Now when I call him he comes flapping and calling the whole way. I was able to get 2 female goslings a few weeks after she died. Boris needed a lot of attention till he could have the goslings. He raised the 2 girls from 2 weeks on. Now they are his wives. I hope you are able to console him. I am so sorry.

I was thinking and didn't want to sound heartless because I am heart broken about this but if you could find a friend for Kiwi maybe the place where you got him? it would sure make a difference for him and you. I don't think it would be disrespectful of Pear either. He is going to be so lonely.

That's great that he found girls!

Thinking about it, I feel so terrible. Poor Kiwi, do geese take other mates?

Kiwi will take another mate given time to adjust. How old is he? If you could find another one or two females that are close to his age and size and give them time to adjust to one another, it is almost certain he will bond with one of them and probably both.

I have one male and two females who grew up together. My male, Sting, is solidly bonded with one female (Lydia) and bonded, but less so, with the other female (Pauline). I am hoping, and signs point that way so far, the in the spring he will mate with both and we will have a happy family. I understand that I may have to move Pauline and her goslings to a safe place until they are larger. Not because he will hurt them but because he may try to kidnap them and give them to Lydia and her brood.

But, start looking around and see what you can find in terms of females to be Kiwi's companions. If nothing else he will have the companionship even if he doesn't show more interest than that. Geese need goose friends.

I haven't read the thread in a few days. I wish I would have. It sounds more like an injury that caused her brain to swell, somewhat similar to wry neck, which poultry get , as you know, from vitamin def, or injuries. When Little Britches died, Alex took it very, very hard, but I did have more geese, that he eventually started to hang out w/ again. Festus my oldest gander stole, Sammy from JC in a fight, so being Sammy was the only female, he followed them around and in a matter of months bonded w/ and took Sammy. I came very close to losing her from a back injury and was frantic for Alex, the most. I don't know how he'd take losing another mate. He never left her side in the months it took for her to recuperate. JC would try to fight him to get her back, but Alex was faithful and stayed, but JC didn't. Even if right now you can only find a male for him, it will help. Since I've had so many ganders and no females, mine bonded to other ganders, so now it's tough getting them to take girls.. I had gotten two females last spring and they bonded w/ mates fast. I guess this is just a different time of year. I hope this never happens again, but PM me if you need medical advise. I don't know much about avians, but I was a large animal(horse)vet tech for many years. I did some of the same things w/ my geese, ducks and chickens and have been lucky on some. I always tube feed them for nutrition and give them Vitamins and DMSO orally w/ lots and lots of water, or it will really burn them. Tube feeding is really easy once you do it. There are lots of videos on it. I was really afraid, but my husband had done it quite a bit when he had chickens and his dad raised turkeys. I Used to give it in bags, IV to the horses, so I could calculate the dose on these. It worked on Sammy who couldn't walk and she'd stagger and fall over. My hubby would swim her in the horse trough for therapy. I've had a duck and a chicken with wry neck and tubed them, and now they are normal. One of the ladies named the chicken Molly for me, on my state BYC thread, because she overcame great odds. I didn't think she would ever come around. The duck came around fast, and Dew Drop, my goos didn't make it. She was coming around good, but looked like maybe she was getting a secondary infection. I gave her a shot of pen and it killed her. She was allergic. It broke my heart as I'm sure yours is. I blame myself for her death since she was coming around so well, but worried about bacteria and gave her the shot. I shouldn't have. I think I posted about that on here a long time ago. It was after Little Britches died, so I guess I did have one more female besides Sammy. Elan was her mate and he is just getting to like and trust me again, because I took her and brought her in the house to take care of her and he never saw her again. It is so heartbreaking when we lose them, but there's a place in Heaven for them too.
