PRODUCTION Toulouse Geese Thread!!

I have to put my 2 cents in

I finally found a few more female geese, but not all the breeds I wanted for my boys, so I'll have some mixed couples. That is if they ever take up w/ each other. 2 are Toulouse, and so far they have a much better temperment than Lucy, my other Toulouse. Mine started out naughty, but when they were little I would put them out to graze w/ baby chicks and muscovys. So they are very protective of the chickens and they tolerate the ducks. They do make the ducks wait to use the pools and I do have several out, but they pretty much guard the ducks too. Especially if they are setting(the ducks) They are no angels, and love to get into mischief, but I'm proud of them for helping my LGD's keep everything as safe as possible. It seems the other poultry know their place w/ the geese so they don't antagonize them. Now last breeding season w/ only 2 females and 9 ganders, it wasn't pretty for any of them, Even the geese.
Do you think I should try to pair them up, by putting couples in pens? I have 3 pairs now that are mated. so the ganders have paired w/ other ganders, which I'm told will happen. I need one more female and have found a buff pomeranian. I have a grey saddleback pom, so i was hoping to pair him up w/ her, but He now seems interested(slightly in one of the Toulouse). I didn't call today to see if they still had the buff pom,but hopefully they still do. I really don't care who they pair up with as long as they're happy. But I would like them to show more interest in the 4 new girls I got. They would call and squawk at them when they were in quarantine, and now that they're out(for two weeks now) they are still snubbing them.

That's great your able to find girls man it's near to impossible around here. If it was me I'd just wait and let them do the pairing, breeding season isn't that far away now and seems they would make the better choices unless you were trying for breed to breed. But if not why not just let them choose and they will once things begin. keep us updated and of course we need some pics of everyone. I hope you can get that pom, what a find. ps, I didn't think Sammy would ever turn his affections to Missy he was in love with a Muscovy, but when breeding season came around that first year. Well things changed real fast.

I agree with ML, unless you're breeding for color then just let them pick their mates, it'll work out.

So I went outside today and Pear was sitting away from the pin, unusual. I walk out there and she doesn't move. I pick her up and she has blood on her beak, in her mouth, her chest and her wings. No idea what happened.

She's currently in the bathtub, not moving.

Maybe something got hold of her. most important they be locked up at night. Did you put her in some nice warm water then look under all her feathers, to make sure she hasn't some wounds you can't see just by looking at her. Even with dogs in next fence over preds get very bold this time of year. they know if the dogs can get to them. she may have gotten to close to the fence and something reached in and grabbed her.

Hows Kiwi?

Actually this must've happened early this morning. Around 6? I went out at 5 to make sure they were ok, then at 8 I noticed she wasn't in the pin! I checked under her feathers, it looks like the blood is from a cut on the top of her beak about an inch long. Don't know what could've gotten just her beak, if the dog grabbed her I feel like he would've kikled her, not given her a thin cut.

Kiwi is good, loud. He's calling for his girl right now!

Coons are known to reach in and grab and have very sharp teeth and nails. Not knowing is hard because it will probably come back to try again. How is she now? Sometimes when something like this happens they can be in shock for a while. Do you have any Veterycin spray for wounds and infections? it is the best stuff and can be safely sprayed in and around their faces. won't hurt if it gets in the eyes either.
