Project Pictures

My current project is to breed a single lace pattern into my Pekin Bantams.

I decided to try this project when I added some new pekin bantams with my two existing Sebright hens.

Stage one of my project - I bred my Silver Pencilled Rooster over my Sebrights. I have three baby chicks from the Silver Sebright hen - two young roos & one young hen. Here's a pic of little roo.

Stage two of my project will be to breed my pekin rooster over my Citrone Sebright to see if I cannot get a different maternal line going.

And then I'll decide Stage three pairings based on my available babies that are exhibiting desirable traits & form.

The alternative direction for this whole project (if the babies favour the sebright form and composure) will be for me to add some different patterns into the sebrights - perhaps some spangling or mottling...

Interesting. In the US they have silver and gold laced Cochins already.

I have to admit.. I do look at the awesome varieties you guys all have and think.. oooo.. aahhhh.. and I have to remind myself that I don't have the time or the space to do big breeding projects here (though I do REALLY wish I could hehe).

I'm not at all surprised that you guys are further along than us. Elsewhere in the world there are a lot more bird keepers and more birds to work with. Also, it's possible you have less restrictions on bringing birds in from elsewhere. NZ will not allow bird imports at all so we just have to work with what we have - no shortcuts - just plain old hard work and perseverance.

And here in NZ there are very few people who really want to go to any effort to work on complicated gene projects (in any bird variety - not just chickens). So far I haven't met anyone who has indicated they are interested in trying new things with either the sebrights or the bantams. They just find a pair that they like an hope that they breed babies that are the same colour!

Do you have silver laced Wyandotte bantams there? They would be easier to convert. The type is better, among other things.

photostudio_1515280700560.jpg DSC_0070.JPG I am attempting to improve my breeders for our Lavender Ameraucanas. I find that they are attempting to have this color accepted into the American Standards as "Self Blue". I kept 2 roosters that I thought meet the Standards for Ameraucanas, but I'm new at this so I would appreciate your thoughts and guidance from those more experienced than I. Here are some photos of what I have, and it was raining the day these photos were taken so they have mud on them photostudio_1515273533936.jpg . The rooster beside the heater is what I choose to start a new flock from the pullets that I have hatched and raised from the flock with the second rooster. Any comments about body, tail carriage, head colors, or what ever you see I would love to hear your thoughts.
