Prolapse?? Egg Bound?? Give up?? Pics...

Just cleaned her again. She kept holding the prolapse in and I had a hard time cleaning it, but that could be a good thing! When I was done, she just jumped about one foot to the crate and went right in, so she is still her fiesty self! Thanks for all your suggestions - I will try the sugar tomorrow at one of the cleanings... already in a rhythm and too tired tonight. I'll keep you updated!

I had a hen with a prolapse and my avian vet treated it with steroid injections to speed up healing and reduce swelling in the protruding tissues, while collapsing the egg that was causing the problem stuck inside her and removing it bit by bit. She was a young bird and kept on laying eggs and it kept happening so after two weeks of unsuccessful treatment I finally had her euthanised on the vet's advice.


Sweetpeeps: Good luck with your hen. Maybe as she is quite old she is nearing the end of her laying anyway and if you can get her through this okay she might be okay. The problem with prolapses is that the hen usually keeps laying and the prolapse will recur...

Update!!! Things weren’t looking good… Georgie (that’s her name… I forgot to mention it!) still had the scab, and she was still protruding – holding it in for a minute but then out would come out. I tried the sugar – no luck. I was getting very discouraged, to say the least. But, I kept up the cleaning 3x/day, antibiotics 2x/day, and vitamins 1x/day.

Tuesday there was a small piece of the scab on the end that separated from her skin so I just cut through it with my fingernails. When I was cleaning her at 1 AM last night, Georgie pulled in the protrusion and off popped the scab!! I couldn’t see if the area was still open or if it is healed completely because she kept it in. Look at the size of it! And it is on the hard side! I wouldn’t want that inside either…. it must have felt awful.

This morning, her protrusion was sometimes out, sometimes in. I let her outside to free range and she is holding it in whenever I can get a peek at it!! Yea!!! I am soooooo ecstatic! I guess things just take time.

Through this all, she has been her rambunctious, strong-willed self. I am kind of worried about her though. Her comb has changed – it’s a little smaller and instead of the bright red, it has a darker coloring to the tips. Her butt is still bright red too. I am going to continue the regiment for at least another week. I’d rather be safe than sorry. She also has that mass on her right side and I don’t know what to do about that.

That vet is probably wondering why I didn’t come back this past Monday after she let me take Georgie back home “so the family can say your good-byes”. Thank you again everyone for your encouragement and advice! xoxoxoxo

I had a ISA-Brown die of that same thing today, wonder what it is??? She stood straight up and her cloaca was open and her back end felt swollen.

I know you have been dealing with this for a while but something my vet did on a stallion I have and I did it to the neighbors hen is to use hypertonic saline solution 7.2%. We squirted it onto both prolapses and they both went back in and NEVER came back again. The hen took a few treatments and the stallion was fine after the first treatment. I do not know if we were just lucky with the 2 times here but it is a suggestion you could try. The stuff is cheap but you have to get it from a vet. I think the huge bottle cost me $10.

I am glad that she is doing well. Like I said in my lengthy post, having gone through it, it was going to take time. One that progresses (through NO fault of yours, just the prolapse itself) to the point where it scabs, etc, it takes upwards of 2 weeks for the process to work its way through even with our help. For anyone that reads this in the future, this explains fairly well the cycle that you can expect if you have a good outcome. I hope she continues to improve. I know that folks like the sugar and honey and that is definately worth trying in the beginning stages of a mild one, but, when they are more severe, it is good to get things like the preparation H around the vent and swollen tissues or the hypertonic solution...things that will help with the tone. I hope she continues along this path! Very exciting!
