Good Morning! We have 6 Chickens currently. One of our Hens. (Richard, he knows he's a she. 😂) Prolapsed with vent gleet several days ago. We noticed, and brought Richard inside. Richard is a 3 year old Jersey Giant. We did everything we could find to do. We soaked, cleaned, sprayed, clipped back feathers, lubricated, and tried to replace the vent. The issue is, about 1/4" of the "vent" is hardened, and covered with feces. We attempted to wipe and remove the hardened feces. However, this lead to bleeding. We've been at this for days. Soaking, cleaning, spraying, lubricating, and trying to replace the vent. Richard immediately pushes it back out. We had no other issues until last night. Richard has been laying eggs, going to the bathroom, and playing around. Last night, the prolapse got bigger. I had to manually remove all backed up fecal matter. This went on through the night. This morning, we tried again. Removed the back up fecal matter, etc, then tried to replace. There is still this hardened part of tissue that isn't "cleaning up?" We called vet after vet. Finally found one, and was quoted $700+ to see & treat Richard. In brutal honesty we can't afford this. We don't want Richard to suffer. However, we also understand this isn't a life for a chicken. Placed in a dark crate, away from the coopmates. Inside. Etc.
We wonder if there is ANY hope of getting this hardened tissue...soft again? Or soft enough to replace into the vent? Or if this is necrotic tissue.

If the vent does not go in on the 4th try, it's not going to go back in and you might as well cull him, because he's going to die anyway.:hit
Sorry, but he isn't going to get better.

Sorry, but it's really an immediate-deal-with type of problem. This happened to us too, it was really sad to see her be culled because she was young. :hit :hitAh, well. 😢
That's what we've read too. The first day, Richard wasn't having it. We replaced, and it was an immediate re-prolapse. Once we saw last night, that he was not able to get his feces out. We figured this would be the inevitable outcome.
I'm so sorry about your chicken as well. It breaks your heart. 💔💔💔💔
