My pullet laid her first egg today. Back story with her since she was about 2 months old she has never had a normal cloaca/vent. She has a hard time passing stool sometimes snd then it inflames the cloaca. I've noticed it had been more swollen the last couple of days so I was anticipating her getting ready to lay. She was straining like she does when she is trying to pass a hard stool so I stuck her in the tub like normal. Well it was an egg woo-hoo for my girl.

She bled a little bit and it's still pretty inflamed but I don't think prolapse per say.... I cleaned her up and sprayed with vetericyn.

Anything else I can or should be doing for her?

Not sure how you can help her. Have you tried adding more liquid to her diet? Maybe feeding a moistened ration?

Hopefully as she lays more eggs it becomes easier on her. Make sure to provide free choice calcium like oyster shells to help with muscle contractions.

I wonder if she was pecked around her vent earlier, and there is scar tissue causing some problems? A human calcium tablet with d3 can help a chicken lay an egg if she is egg bound. It also helps if there is a prolapse. The vent looks odd, so I would suspect previous damage. If she is constipated, you can offer some small pieces of chilled coconut oil to peck.

Thank you. Her vent has never been normal and or digestive tract. :(

She gets fermented feed along with coconut oil on the regular and free choice grit and oyster shells. I will pick up a calcium tablet to have on hand for her as well.
