I'm sitting here laughing myself into a coma. You know you love your chickens when you are trying to decide if a spray or ointment will feel "nicer" on their butt.

I have one similar to her. Only six months old, prolapsed badly in April. I tried some of what you did for 3 days, to no avail, then decided, in consultation with family members, after a failed attempt to put her out of what we assumed to be her misery, to let nature take its course and the hen do what she wanted (she did NOT like having her bum washed or the prolapsed flesh reinserted), as she was, apparently, otherwise fine, albeit foraging in slow gear most of the time.
I stopped examining and harassing her, the other hens did not peck at it, she ceased laying, and she was observed carefully cleaning it, little by little looking better daily, until about 2 weeks later her vent looked normal, and her behaviour was back to entirely normal, minus laying eggs. During that time I found what looked like a bit of oviduct when pooh picking the coop. I concluded that she'd undergone a natural amputation and would never lay again, but I was happy to keep her for gardening duties.
I was amazed when 3 weeks after the prolapse she laid a perfectly formed 53g egg (she had been laying in the 60s before prolapse). She laid a 62g the next day, a 59g the next, and I thought we were back to normal, but she then stopped again. 2 1/2 weeks later she laid another, 63g; 5 days later another, 59g. Nothing for the last 3 days. During this time we've had new introductions to the flock so pecking order issues might have impacted her production. Thus she's become a very erratic layer at present, but I consider every egg a bonus given how bad her prolapse was, and most of all, I am very glad I failed to cull her.
