Hi there, I’m new to backyard chickens so I apologize if I’m not posting in the appropriate forum but I believe my baby quail rescue has a prolapsed vent and I’m hoping someone here can confirm/ deny and offer some kind of advice.

Bailey had a fairly mild case of pasty butt last night, so we soaked the area in warm water and dried him off, but noticed some redness/ swelling. We were very careful and gentle when removing the feces, but for the rest of the night he would not stop crying unless I held him. So I did, until around 6:30 this morning and stayed up all night researching.

The swelling is still present today. He’s had a couple of liquidy poops but otherwise pretty normal, although pretty soft droppings. Today we cleaned his vent again and applied a small amount of hydrocortisone cream in hopes it will help with the swelling. We used a Qtip to try to gently push the vent back in place, and Bailey didn’t seem to be bothered by it but it would not stay in.

I could be way off and this may not even be a prolapse, but I’m very worried. Any help/ advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance :)

**I attached a photo- I have a video where you can see the area more clearly, but I’m not sure how to attach it.

It looks like the vent is swollen, but not prolapsed at this time. It may be from constipation. I would offer some chilled coconut oil cut into small pieces, or a little olive or mineral oil mixed into a little egg or wet feed. That plus drinking some water often may help loosen up the droppings. Do you have an heat source or heat lamp? How warm is it? Others familiar with quail hopefully will help.

Thank you for your response!!! He has been living in a makeshift brooder on my nightstand the couple weeks, he has a warm side and a cold side. We have a heat lamp hanging above and have been tapering down in heat. He’s been in around 85-90F but sometimes goes to the warmer part which is why I’ve been having trouble deciding if we should lower the heat anymore. I know the cold side should probably be colder but he’s so tiny and seems to like the heat. Should it be 85/90 directly under the lamp? I also offered him a mixture of electrolyte/probiotic water through a syringe and he drank a lotttt of it (after handling the pasty butt). Sorry for the long message. I will try some of the things you suggested. Thank you again!!!
