prolapsed vent UPDATE** graphic picture warning**

newchickmom
could you actually see the egg? I cannot feel an egg anywhere.
Ive tried several times to put her business back in. Im quite certain I will have to have my husband cull her. He is out of town now so Im just treating her and hoping to wake up each morning and find it put away. I actually think its getting a little worse. Poor thing.

update on this hen
Her vent would not stay in. I tried for several days, and cleaned it and put honey on it. I never did use prep H. Finally I decided to put her back in with the rest of the girls, until she got picked on, or weak, or something, because, other than the prolapse, she was fine, and she wanted out of the hospital cage. So now a little over 2 weeks since the initial discovery of the prolapse, and after hen has been placed back in general population, and I am no longer messing with her vent, her prolapse has gone back in, and she is just fine. Im so glad I didnt kill her. She really did seem fine, so thats why we never could go through with it. She acted so unlike a sick bird.
She also continued to lay eggs during this whole ordeal. I never could get her to stop doing that.

Great pics, Thanks for sharing all the info. I have never had this happen, but if I see one of mine like that , at least I know there is hope. It does look nasty! You did a great job caring for her.
So glad she is doing better.

Does anyone know if you can cut a small opening in the membrane and release the egg that way?! It might sound like a silly question, but i am new at this whole thing and i have a bantam that has prolapsed. Her egg is small and the membrane around it seems very thin.. i have started her on antibiotics to help prevent infection. I am just wondering if anyone has done this successfully or has heard of it. I have done a bit of research and have heard that someone cut the whole thing off and their chicken is apparently laying to this day.. seems kinda extreme and unnecessary to me! Any advice/opinion would be great! - Sorry to crash your thread!

Yes, I just saw a post where someone used an X-Acto knife. It's on page one of this thread by Southern Belle. I wouldn't have the confidence to do it, I'd be afraid I'd cause more harm but it sounds like she did a great job!. Good luck!!! Prolapses are the worst--my Mathilda just prolapsed last Saturday night and is still inside with us recovering--our first and hopefully last prolapse!

Thanks to all who responded about the prolapsed vent. One of our NH Reds had this yesterday and we especially appreciated the pictures showing how to treat it. It took us two tries but her vent is still in this morning. There was a huge egg in the nest box this morning and maybe that was the problem although we're not sure it was hers. We're hoping it won't happen again. How can we try to prevent it?

The girls of Lamprey Lane say "THANKS!"

Our NH Red is not doing well today. Her vent is still red and swollen. I cleaned her up again and felt for an egg but found sores inside with caked on poop. We applied some antibiotic cream. She's had yellow fluid coming out but she's trying to get out more. She's been very lethargic but did eat some yogurt. I'm thinking we're going to lose her. Any ideas?
