Property Line Trees...Who would have thought a neighbor would do this?

Sue the tree cutters, then sue your neighbor. Put up a 8 foot fence 2 in inside your property line and forget your neighbors. I guess you can tell I HATE LIES.

Hmmm... her description stated "taken from the property line". I don't know about all states, but many including mine consider "line trees" as essentially property in common that requires approval of both parties for removal or alteration.

I've done a fair amount of research on this topic as I have had similar problems with my neighbors.

This really ticks me off. I would sue them both... What horrible people! That is called passive aggressive. In my younger years, I was always forgive and forget. As I have gotten older, I know how to hold a grudge. I would not forgive those people or let it go.

I don't mean to sound grumpy or worse, crazy, when I say I can hold a grudge! LOL I just mean that I don't let people walk on me as much.

Please keep us posted.

It is old and has some dying branches - but it blossoms every year and provides shade for our dog run.

Apparently, my neighbor called the foreman in to the house, told him the tree was on their property

So, the real question is, was it really on their property? If it was on their property, and had dying branches, then they may have had a serious liability issue with it staying as is. If it wasn't on their property, then yes they owe you compensation.

If this was on their property then you may just have to accept that you don't really have control over how your neighbors choose to landscape their yard. I would get myself a nice locust tree and enjoy watching it grow through the years, whose cost that is depends upon whose tree it was that was cut down.

And if it was on the property line they both would have to agree to take it down. She should be entitled to half if not the whole replacement cost.

both would also be responsible for cost to remove a dying tree if it was in fact on the property line. The tree guy is going to say it was dying and HAD to be removed

That is how it is in CA too. If the tree is on the line then both parties have to come to an agreement.

She said the neighbor told the tree cutters that the tree was on the their property not OP's.
