Pros and Cons of quail?

Pics
So now I have a couple of more questions:

1. What diseases can quail get?

2. At what age can you vent sex?

3. Can you crossbreed them?
1) Bumblefoot is the first one that comes to mind. Not sure of anything else. Again, more experienced quail keepers will know more :)

2) When they're sexually mature, so about.... 6-8 weeks :)

3) Yeppers!

I'd rather not vent sex. lol
Understandable 😂 it’s actually not too bad once you get the hang of it
Aren't celadons brown with white breast? Or is that the colour Tuxedo? Lol I'm a bit confused.

Would it work if I vent sexed them at 1day old and seperate the males from females?
Brown with a white chest is Tuxedo color, Celadons can be any color, they just lay blue eggs 🙂
Quail can’t be vent sexed until they’re mature, so usually a few weeks old at least. Pharaoh color is feather-sexable, so you should be able to tell for them at around 3 weeks old.

You can crossbreed the different colors of Coturnix, just not different species (Coturnix x Bobwhite for example)

Here are two of my Tuxedos that I use to have

And here is a female Pharaoh, you can see the spots on her chest compared to the male you posted earlier 🙂

Oh that's usefull to know! Thanks! I got confused about the vent sexing with chickens. Got it now!

Pharaoh are the standard brown wild types coturnix. They are very easy to feather sex starting at about 3 weeks old. The females will have spotted chests, the males will have red or rust coloured chests.

Celadon can be any colour variation, but are still coturnix. They are celadon if they lay blue eggs If you are lucky, they may come in a feather sexable colour, but they can come in any coluor. My celadons are mostly rosetta or silver tuxes (neither feather sexable), but I have a pharaoh celadon too.

They can interbreed because they are the same species, just different colours. If you interbreed them, though, you are not likely to get celadon layers. The celadon gene is recessive, and you need to breed celadon to celadon to keep that trait.

As for diseases, they can get pretty much any of the diseases that chickens can get. The best way to keep them healthy is to keep them clean and limit their exposure as much as possible by practicing good biosecurity. For example, have one set of shoes that you wear only around them or having a bleach bath to step in. Don't let strangers wander around without using the bleach bath on the bottoms of their shoes. Keep your quail separate from other birds if possible. When you get new birds, keep them quarantined for a month.

You'll find a lot of this in the articles that I linked to in my earlier post. :)
