Protecting Hens from Japan Fallout!

Wow, that is quite well put.

My DH worked on building the STNP(South Texas Nuclear Project) several years ago and I mentioned this thread to him and the fact that some folks thought the OPs question was a bit foolish. He kinda smirked and said that it is WAY more foolish to NOT be afraid of nuclear fallout than TO be.
Do I think we will be affected here, no, but I don't think her question warranted some of the responses she has gotten.

Bless you, friend.

What's the price of a Corona in OK.?

That depends on whether you buy it from the beer store or the liquor store (different alcohol by volume content). It'll cost you about $3 in bars and resturants.

I buy beer across the river, in Texas.

Amen! Some of us need to read our responses over and maybe say them out loud to see how they sound before we hit the post button. If you don't have something nice to say - just go to a different thread.
And a note to the OP - I have certainly at times said something (typed) and it came off different than I meant it - and I know some of the comments on here were just meant in a friendly and joking manner, so try to be a duck in this situation - just let it slide off.

I'm still on page one, so if this has gone way off topic, I apologize. But...

WARNING RANT AHEAD!

Yes, what is going on with the reactors over there is scary and no, none of really trust government reporting (nor should you trust the media). BUT THERE IS NO FALLOUT BECAUSE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION!!! (yet

) It is concerning enough that there have been small explosions secondary to the build-up of pressure, and yes contaminated steam and sea water have been released. This is all bad, but it is not a nuclear explosion. I'm talking a nuclear explosion with fission products and ultra-fine particles being ejected into the stratosphere. You need an explosive yield of greater than 10 kilatons, which would also flatten a large portion of Japan. So, when you see images of a fireball extending high into the atmosphere with parts of Japan flattened and other parts burning... that is when you will see me become concerned about fallout reaching you and your birds. I have a hell of a lot more radon in my basement than anything that is going to fall in the rain we are expecting tomorrow. If I had the money to spare for all that special stuff for my chickens, I'd be sending the cash to Japan's tsunami survivors instead of feeding it to my birds.

Sorry to be so frank, but the scale of the tragedy experienced over there is so horrible to even contemplate that your panic over non-existent fallout comes across as callous and self centered histrionics.

First, I saw that you were posting a rant.
Second (and you may have missed this in the posts) the OP said that she was borderline OCD and anxiety ridden. She was honestly seeking information to ally her anxiety. I hope that the wonderful people on this board did that for her. I'm pretty sure that they did, because between the funny posts there was some wonderful information for her.

IF those plants DO explode we might ALL have a problem in the near future. (the west coast, where the OP is from, more than the east coast where many of us live) Then again, maybe we won't. We won't know until it happens. But that's how *I* deal with things. Not everyone does, hense the OP's original question.

Until then, I, for one, am keeping Japan in my prayers and thoughts ... and if some of my funds become available I will be donating to some organization that is trying to help out all of those who were so devistatingly affected by this whole disaster.

Thank you Cass for your understanding. My philosophy is that it never hurts to be prepared and just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't any danger out there! You and some others have been very supportive. I just asked a question the other day and now I'm being told I'm wasting money on my hens and therefore a selfish person! I'm OK with that though. I see people that are full of fears of their own and haven't been able to deal with it. For example I've heard several references to basements being dangerous yet folks are living with that and have to deal with the fear in some way. Anyway I've heard some very good ideas, like staying out of the rain (full of radiation) and adding kelp to our diets. I think that is all the good advice I'm going to get from this forum so this will be my last visit to this particular subject and I will leave it to anyone to rant that feels they need to and I won't look back. Thanks again to those that gave me support and good ideas. Good night.
