I am far more concerned, due to the close proximity of the disaster, of the fish coming from the ocean than I am about airborne radiation reaching even the West Coast of the US. However, I'm sure that there are going to be strict screening processes set up to monitor for radiation, just as there were screening processes set up for seafood after the Gulf oil spill. As far as airborne radiation reaching the US, there are already screening sites reporting results as we speak, mostly in CA, NV, and UT. I just accessed a radiation report in my own state. There were minimal amounts of iodine-131 and zenon-133, no other reason for them to be detected where we live other than the Japan problem...were detected. But in amounts so minimal that they pose absolutely no danger. On the other hand, the spiral of consequences due to radioactivity reaching the oceans...I do believe we will see a significant change in consumable seafood from that area. And on top of everything, Japan is such a large exporter of electronics, automobiles, and so many other consumer goods...we will see a new and different normal in the global economy for years to come.
