It'll work. But what are you going to eat in the shelter? Not the CHICKENS!!!

Kelp and radishes, of course. Wouldn't dream of eating the chickens..... for a while, anyway.

Sue Ive been reading the posts and your concern is legit!! Please remember all of this typing doesnt have facial expressions or voice tones for us to know how the others are really reacting. This very issue is why I tend to shy away from in your face book and most other internet stuff. One thing we have on BYC is LOTS of smiley faces! I have given the radiation some thought and what I have decided is, the governments probably wont be honest because they dont want panic. my second thought is if there is a problem for us in the US it may be with our ocean fish supply! Try to eat local and learn how to catch brook trout! I love sustainable fish but I will be cautious and keep my ears open. We already have mercury in our fish supply to consider so this is just one more thing to stay well informed about!!

I think you've put your finger right on the root of the problem. Media want audiences, and what draws an audience better than drama? So they hype the story.

Several years ago, we cancelled our cable tv. Now we use our TV only to watch DVDs and streaming movies. We read our news online. Sometimes when we're setting up to watch a movie we catch a couple of minutes of the TV news and we just have to laugh at how superficial and silly the news programs have become. And it's mainly drug companies advertising on them.

I am far more concerned, due to the close proximity of the disaster, of the fish coming from the ocean than I am about airborne radiation reaching even the West Coast of the US. However, I'm sure that there are going to be strict screening processes set up to monitor for radiation, just as there were screening processes set up for seafood after the Gulf oil spill. As far as airborne radiation reaching the US, there are already screening sites reporting results as we speak, mostly in CA, NV, and UT. I just accessed a radiation report in my own state. There were minimal amounts of iodine-131 and zenon-133, no other reason for them to be detected where we live other than the Japan problem...were detected. But in amounts so minimal that they pose absolutely no danger. On the other hand, the spiral of consequences due to radioactivity reaching the oceans...I do believe we will see a significant change in consumable seafood from that area. And on top of everything, Japan is such a large exporter of electronics, automobiles, and so many other consumer goods...we will see a new and different normal in the global economy for years to come.
