Public Education

LOL so does HOMESCHOOLING

Yes it can be frustrating to teach in a bad district, but I honestly believe that most of our public schools are doing great given what they have to work with.

I honestly don't know why people are always bashing public school. I went to a public school, my kids go to public schools. I received a good education, and my children are receiving a good education. My 8 year old needs extra help, and he gets it. I think most public schools are good. I think some people just like to complain.

You are in a good district then, not all are from what has been said. It also depends a lot on the parents and the children them self. I believe education system does need fine tuning overall though. Discipline in the schools is not what it used to be. Things happen these days in some schools that just is intolerable.

I have to agree with you. We are now in our 8th year of homeschool and the thought of sending my child off to strangers just seems completely foreign to me. He is on his own schedule and does things that kids in any school would never have a chance to do (like learning two foreign languages at once). We modify according to his tastes and learning style. What would have happened to my children if I didn't let them be themselves as they learned? It makes me cringe.

With that said, I think the public school system where we are is just fine. I have never sent my kids there - so I don't know what it is really like. But my neighbor is a teacher at the Jr. high and she seems to love her job. That says something.

The only problem with isolationist ideals is that stupid island. If one can manage to teach competently in all subjects in a home environment, you have my admiration. Personally, I am strong in some subjects and would actually enjoy teaching them but some other required topics are not my cup of tea. The island and no man being one, there are severe consequences to not making public education a priority. Ruth and I live in a racially segregated area (not by law but by practice) and the disparity between public and private education is.....an area where most communities must make improvements.

I agree the schools should be available, they always were. I just think they should not be mandated, because everyone learns in a different way, and everyone develops at a different rate.

I also somewhat agree about teaching different subjects, but in this day and age, there are such a variety of resources available that the homeschooled child actually has more oppertunities then the public schooled child.

Oh, and there is NOTHING isolationist about homeschooling. Most homeschooled children have more varied interactions with the world and the people in it then any publicly schooled child.

Rather like the question of socialization, the only people who question whether or not a homeschooled child has enough exposure to the outside world are people who don't homeschool. For some reason people seem to think that homeschooling means I teach my child everything without any help. Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't know everything and I don't excell at every subject, but luckily there are lots of paths for my children to follow to get the education they need. In public school there are usually one or two paths and often those paths are not the most efficient or long-lasting. Does traditional school work for some kids? Of course! Does it work for a vast majority of the children currently enrolled? I don't think so. Like warmfuzzies said:

I think that education should be taken away from the government monopoly that it currently is and allow more people to make choices that best fit their children. Private school is so far out of the reach of most people that it doesn't even count as a choice. I would love to see education reach its full potential in this country, but that will never occur as long as it is mandated by the government in its current form.

A monopoly implies there are no other choices than the primary; homeschooling and private are two available choices to public school. I did not intend to debate the worth of a home schooled program, I simply pointed out that I did not feel adequately prepared to teach. If I were to reach out to additional resources, it would be a certified teacher in a public school setting.

Very worried about our grandkids education.
They just don't teach common sense anymore. Luckily we live in BFE so we get a more real life experience for our kids in the local public school district for the 2 grandkids here.
But we have 2 in the Houston school district(s). They are not so lucky, and are constantly bombarded with things that have nothing to do with real life as their parents know it. Even they are somewhat complicit.
The oldest is 31, next is 27.
The 31 year old is "progressive" and thinks that the more she gives to others eventually they will take less. Her oldest son will likely grow up as being taken advantage of his entire life.
The 27 year old's dtr is always fighting back and is developing her own personality (sins of thingy) but she will be better off and will be able to rise above others who give in and just rely on someone else to get them thru life.
The 2 that live close to us, well they are doing great and at 5 and 3 know what life can offer them. They are in a small public school where we can make a difference.
