I mean, it's a needle, it hurts a little, but it's a standard procedure for things like small abscesses, hematomas, biopsying tumors... to be clear, my experience is with mammals, not fowl, but the same procedure can be used on any species. It's done on humans as well as animals. Drawing fluid won't hurt (like draining a pimple), but drawing flesh will probably pinch. My biggest concern would be restraining him, making sure he doesn't jump or move... you can find a short needle, perhaps like an insulin syringe, that will be easier to maneuver. You obviously want to keep to the inflamed flesh, and not go too deep.
Clean/disinfect the insertion spot as well as you can, use a sterile needle, and clean it afterwards. Then cap the syringe with the contents inside, and take it to the vet. I'd call before doing this, they may have certain procedures or a time they want you to bring it.
