Puffy eyed peafowl.

I ordered some baytril so I hope that helps. Indy is 4 hours away and all tho my birds mean everything to me I couldn't afford that. I only pay $7 for my peafowl. Male and female. I get them from babies. I know that sounds awful. I'm just not finicial able to spend that kind of money. Does that make me bad :( ?

No, that does not make you bad. Most people on this thread know more about birds than vets. ;) So you are in the right place. I would take suggestions from a lot of people on this thread before I would a vet that went to school for 7 years. I get my education from people on here. ;)

So do you think I should wait until the medicine is delivered? I have an nfz puffer I used on her once today. And I did go buy a new exacto blade just incase I need it. I figured I should wait for the medicine. Treat with puffer until then. Once I get the baytril start her on that to see how she responds. And if need be I can cut. I have some vecetrcyn for use post op. I've never cut into any of my animals and I'm a little Leary of it. Is there any natural sedatives I could give her to help her relax if I have to cut her. I'd hate for her to move to much at the wrong time while I have s sharp blade at her face. Also. I have 4 males and only one female. Will that be a problem? They have all grown up together for the most part. It just happened that way. I didn't know the genders when I got them all.

When I did the surgery on the wild feed store peahen, I put her in a feed bag that I cut a hole in, put her head and neck through the hole, taped her legs together and put a piece of tape on the outside of the bag to keep her from flapping her wings. That seemed to keep her calm enough.

Before you cut her open, you might want to see if you can aspirate some of the infection out with a needle and syringe. Careful not to poke the eye.

In addition to the knife, you'll probably need tweezers to pull the pus mass out. FWIW, I used betadine to clean the area and stuffed a cotton ball soaked in betadine into the hole when done.

From the description, I'm not sure the puffer is helpful (but it probably isn't harmful). Those with experience will probably have comments. But since the source of your girl's problem is likely to be a sinus infection, she probably doesn't have any external wounds?

No external wounds. So do you think I should cut into her now instead waiting a week for the medicine? That bag idea is wonderful! By the way. Again the pus substance is not hard. It is mushy. Do think I should try a less evasive measure first? Like a saline rinse. How would you proceed?

If she were mine, I would take an 18 gauge needle and syringe and see what I could get out of it. If it were clear, I'd leave it alone and just treat with oral antibiotics. If it looked like pus, I'd probably lance it. If you press it, does any liquid come out of her eye or nostrils?

Disclaimer: The only time I have done the surgery was when the lumps were firm.

Okay. I just inserted small needle and syringe. (All I have) and punctured her skin. It went in good but I didn't draw anything out and after removing the needle I tried to squeeze puss out with no luck. Her one nostril was clogged up with dried mucus, I cleaned it and rinsed her nose and eye with warm water then with saline. I rubbed a little Vicks on her head and shot some nfz puffer in her eye. I was hoping for better results, but after not drawing or squeezing anything out I stopped so I can give y'all an update and be advised on how to proceed. *wonderful tip about putting her in a feed bag! That however did work perfect!!
