This cockerel is not a leghorn or a leghorn mix. He is much too massive. An 8 week old leghorn cockerel is just a tad scrawny looking.

It is a Rhode Island White...or so I was told by the breeder.

A Rhode Island White should have a rose comb, but a lot of hatchery stock has single combs.....

Can you point our some kind of documentation on that? I know the APA has discussed admitting the single comb RIW, but I cannot find any on-line documentation where they have actually done it. If you can point me in that direction, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks. )

Certainly! This is where I found that little tidbit. It seems that most sites still claim that the rose comb is the only standard but when you look at the last page updates you'll see dates prior to 2010.

I saw this when I was looking, but it says the 2010 Standard of Perfection now "discusses" the Rhode Island Whites with single combs which is now the most common variation. It doesn' t say that it has "admitted" the RIWs with single combs to the Standard of Perfection, which seems to confirm my understanding that the APA has been discussing it since 2010, but has not yet actually admitted the RIW single comb as a breed.
