Our flock is about 9 weeks old, mixed production reds and Asian blacks. Have a few suspected cockerels. Thanks for your help!

Thank you all! I think we might be the luckiest TSC customers ever. I have one more that I suspect is a cockerel, all his tail feathers slope down but he’s smaller than everyone else. I assume we ended up with mixed ages. But looks like 11 of 12 are pullets!

Comb/wattle size and color are much easier. Also patchiness and bright colors on wings is a big indicator. Pointed saddle feathers come next. By the time a cockerel would be getting sickle feathers, all the other signs should have shown. I personally never really look at tails, pullets often have wonky ones too due to juvenile feathers.

Interesting. We don’t have anyone with a large comb/ wattle and don’t know if it’s breed specific. Some of the skin on their faces is starting to turn red’ish but none are screaming future roo to me. When do saddle feathers start to show or become obviously roo’ish?
