Pullet or Roo????

Thank you so much!! So happy you think I have girls. My two boys and myself hold the chicks every day.....we want them to be friendly as well as egg layers. Like I said, this is my first time with chickens so I know nothing and looking at the picture you put up and wondering what kind of chicken that is on the left....it is beautiful (your red is also a pretty girl)! If I do good at this whole chicken thing I might want to get one just to look at :)

Last year we were only going to have two hens. I had the chicks 3 days, bought another one. 2 days later brought another one home. I did this until I had 8. Luckily I got all hens with picking a few from the straight run bin. My husband told our kids they could get chicks again this year for Easter. I did not object one bit since I take 100% care of them. It's been such a great experience having my hens, but out of 8 we were running out of eggs with our family of 5. I bake a lot and we use a lot of eggs! The chick on the left is a frizzle Cochin. She is very sweet, but not a strong layer. She loves to sit on the already laid eggs at time, but never has gone broody since I pick up my eggs through out the day. I'm assuming she's an oops mix in color. She has a Columbian marking with brown color on her wings and back. Out of the 11 hens I have 9 different breeds. My goal was to have colorful eggs, which I do.

If you decide to get more next year, you'll need to integrate them. I had to integrate mine last year due to the older ones too old to be around the babies.lol. I had to put an xl wire dog kennel to keep the younger ones safe in the coop for 3 weeks. You'll need at least two to integrate. If you want one more, the time is to do it now while they are young. Once they reach 4 weeks of age they need to be separated or the older ones will pick on or kill the little ones. The pecking order is brutal. They grow fast and the pecking order is established fairly quick. I love having the hens!
