I'm always at a loss looking for birthday presents for my wife. Last week I needed something from Tractor Supply and saw they had chicks in stock. A bit of research into the city codes revealed we're allowed 4 chickens, as long as they are kept 50' from the house. The back fence is 54' from the house - good enough! But, would they make a good present? I knew she'd like the idea of fresh eggs, but if I just mentioned the idea, we'd spend months researching and never actually take the plunge.
So, making an excuse that we needed some groceries, I snuck out last night and bought 6 pullets (the minimum required purchase). Put them in a wooden crate and stapled a bow to the front. Hid them in the garage until midnight, then announced that it was officially her birthday and time for her present.
She sat and stared at them for an hour.
I got a pretty nice kiss goodnight.
Sitting at the auction today, she whispered that it was hard to focus on the bidding because she kept thinking about the chicks at home.
Methinks it was a success.
