Pullet swallowed a foot of paracord.

Wow. My dog has eaten some crazy and amazing things but I’m glad that hasn’t been one of them. I’m just hoping either the oil will help Slide it through nicely so it won’t get tangled around anything or maybe grit will break it up. But I don’t know about it breaking up because para cord is pretty tough stuff. But I’ve read a couple posts on here of things being eaten and everything turning out OK. So I’m glad there’s hope for your chicken yet. Before I was able to find something to clear up my dogs dermatitis she was chewing on her self so bad she got hair wadded up in her stomach causing a blockage. The vet kept her overnight and fed her Vaseline. And it worked! But I don’t know how Vaseline with you and the chickens body

If you can, notice the consistency of the poop, note if it is watery or unformed, or appears formed and normal. Also, note if she appears to start to strain more than normal when pooping. Hoping she continues to do well...:fl

The first 24 hours after it happened, she had watery poops - perhaps the oil had something to do with it. And she did seem to be straining at times.

Her poops have returned to normal, well formed poops for the most part, decent sized for her age. I counted 5 in the pen after the 3 hours she was outside playing. (There were probably more.) She seems to be eating, but that's hard to track at her size.

I am cautiously optimistic - it's still wait and see. :fl But she's very active, so I'm hopeful.

Did you feel if it was coiled up at all in the crop?
-Because crop surgery isn’t terribly difficult and there are some great you tube videos, one which has been posted here on BYC numerous times.

Working in an animal emergency clinic taught me some interesting approaches to dilemmas.
One older vet I worked with was a big believer in “Vaseline sandwiches” when an animal had eaten something sharp or dangerous and was either too old for anesthesia or the owners absolutely couldn’t afford surgery.
Two ingredients.
Squishy white bread and a jar of Vaseline.

Flatten the bread slices somewhat with your hands.
Spread on the Vaseline thick
Top with the other slice of bread just like a sandwich. Tear it into chunks. Most Dogs seem to love it.
The theory: the fresh white bread would wad up around and push whatever was sharp or stuck and the Vaseline would slide it along.

It worked amazingly well but was disgusting to clean up.

Since chickens (I’ve read) are not really supposed to have petroleum products, I’d be tempted to try this with softened solid coconut oil.

It all sounds good to me, as long as she has normal consistency poops on a regular basis, she must be eating, and her being active, alert, and interested is a good sign that where ever the cord is, it is currently not creating any blockage. It is just possible that birds have some way of dealing with these situations that we just don't know about. And, since 2 other people here have had birds that continued on through life without any difficulty after a similar event, I am optimistic, too! The signs to continue to watch for would be as given before, not eating, watery poop (because solids can't make it around the blockage), lethargy, depressed mood, droopy, straining. None of that happening, so all is, so far, so good! Keeping my fingers crossed too :fl! I would think that as she grows larger, the chances of it causing problems would decrease. Keep us posted!
