People will tell you it's impossible to mix young children and roosters. This isn't entirely true - yes, you have to be VERY careful when they're mingling, and watch for aggressive body language out of the roo to stop attacks from happening in the first place.....but that being said, there ARE males out there who wouldn't hurt a fly. And usually, if by an established age (2 years or so?) he hasn't shown any signs of being untrustworthy around your little one (dog, too), it's unlikely you'll have problems. It won't be hard to tell as he matures whether he'll turn out well or not.

Our 2-year-old bantam rooster is an angel in the presence of my younger brothers, ranging in age from 8 to 2. He wouldn't dream of harming them.

However, it all depends on what you personally are comfortable with. :) If keeping a rooster around stresses you out too much, then you're not obligated to hold on to him.

Ours is very much a gentleman. I don't mix him and the dogs, but he does very well with my 3 year old. I keep a really close eye on them and I've never seen him make any aggressive moves toward my son. He takes care of his hens too. I think a lot of it depends on the breed and temperament. You could always give it a try, and get rid of him later if he starts showing any aggression. This article was really helpful to me: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/beekisseds-rooster-speak.73664/

Well bad news - he started getting sassy today when I was doing work outside. I kept him because I thought he was a female - didn’t sprout tail feathers and quite a small comb for awhile - he tricked me. He’s free to a good home - anyone in central PA?
