Pullets v. Roos.......

I don't know if this is the appropriate section but am wondering for all who hatch their own chicks what is you ratio of pullets and Roos for your hatches. Also does the bator temp have anything to do with the ratio? A coworker’s husband told me that he can pretty much hatch out mostly pullets by the temp of his bator.

well, the chances of getting a pullet or a roo is kinda 50/50. but idk, heat could have something to do with it. when Alligators lay they're eggs, heat matters. i think the females are the ones that develope when its really warm and are tword the bottom and the males develop with the not as warm temp,and are more tword the top. but what do i know. im in the 8th gread and im a newby at chickens

I think if there were any truth in it the hatcheries would not have all those extra roosters. The incubating heat formula for all pullets would have been published long ago.

I have 15 chicka now 1 1/2 weeks old from the ooks of them 9-10 are roos! ThATs my luck though--Id be shocked if I was wrong! I wasnt going to but started saving more of my BO egs to incubate on Friday to change the odds-Ill sell the roo chicks--I really wanted it to swngthe other way!

I've gotten 100% roos in my last clutches.... I've only hatched 1 girl and that was in Jan. I have 5 or so more clutches and they have all been roos..... My bator is cursed!

Sex of the chick is not set by the temp of the incubation - that is the crocodilian species, not chickens. As someone else pointed out, if you could even INFLUENCE the ratio with fluctuations in temp of the bator the hatcheries wouldn't have all those spare roosters they have to euthanize every day.

The genetic material that determines the gender of the chick is contained by the ova released by the hen. At the time of conception, when the hen's ovum and the roosters sperm unite, the gender is already set.

It's the opposite of the way that human gender is determined by the sperm at the time of conception, but the same 'concept' (pun intended... ) in that from the moment the two genetic packets unite the gender is set for that egg - before the shell is ever built around it.
