Pumpkin Hulsey Color Genetics?

The E.H. Hulseys were a lemon hackled mostly yellow legged reds that was fought by Henry Wortham of Dallas.

He needed more size to the birds so he bred into them a Pumpkin colored cock from Charlie Babb. The pumpkin birds were called "Babbs"

I am wondering if the Babb cock might have been a Yellow Birchen.

Here is a picture of a "Gold" pure Yellow Birchen. They were brought over from Ireland just after the turn of the century by O Conner.

I bought him from Ron Lutz in kansas. He looks alot like Pumpkin Hulseys.

I posted this on another message board, but will put it here as well for people interested in the Pumpkin Hulsey, and the Yellow Birchens.

History of Pumpkin Hulseys. Bingham Gold thread

This is lengthy, but alot of good reading. Particuarly that from Wildfoot.

I was going to try to quote it here, but was easier to post a link.

I will quote part of it referring to the breeding of the E H Hulseys and the Babb Cock.

"the original e.h hulsey's were 1/2madigin claret, 1/4barnett wonder and 1/4 shelton or allen roundhead which
john pipes bred and it marked outside left and outside right. said they were never out of position and never off balance
and they were invincible in lower weights. those hulseys that came in large or in upper weights were not good as pit fowl.
and in 1930 mr henry wortham along with mr hulsey fought a pumpkin/red quill (kabilyada) colored shake cock which won easily.
.this is a charley babb brood cock private breeding of memphis tennessee (partially a dave smith blue) and later bred to the original e.h. hulsey blood.
as the above gentlemen reside in texas..later this blood were acquired by some close friends." this came from the above link and was posted by "Wildfoot"

The Babb cock is where the color came from in the Pumpkin Hulsey.

Here is a link to my Gold birds that are Yellow Birchen and look alot in color like Pumpkin Hulseys.

Gorgeous birds! I love the white pumpkins!! I have been thinking about getting some of these since I first saw them last year. How are the temperaments on these guys?

That varies as all breeds, I haven't heard of most pumpkin hulseys being aggressive towards people, but no doubt that there are a few odds in the bunch - just part of chickens. Towards other birds, being games the cocks should not get along at all, but a lot of people are getting them now and breeding this aggression out.. Really a sad subject for me, as i believe it takes away from what they truly are and they should be preserved for what they ARE while being used as show birds. But as i always say- everyone has their own opinion and it's up to them how they want to breed/raise their own birds

I agree , best to keep these birds with the game. One thing about gamecocks is how brave they are, lost one of mine that attacked a stray dogs after his hens. Even had a gamehen attack a fox after her peeps, of corse both lost the fight.

I love the bravery of these chickens, I try to keep a few pure lines. Now little more work to keep the cocks seperated.

Can anyone tell me what color the chicks should be at hatch? I just hatched 15 chicks from Greenfirefarms and most came out yellow, a few came out chipmunked and one came out light orange.
