Pumpkin seeds for worming?

ACV should actually slightly decrease the acidity (increase the pH) of stomach acid. Gastric acid runs about a pH of 1-2, whereas ACV is about 4. Looked this up when someone suggested it to me for GERD; turns out that water works just as well.

I just read about the Mc Master technique for testing for worms--it was interesting.
But it did make me laugh--I was thinking about me doing this test for worms on the chicken poop and my husband coming home and seeing what I was doing --for sure he would think that I completely lost it this time--LOL!!!!

:rant) next. That will solve the whole raw milk issue, right?

Also, imho, discussions about ideas are what progress is all about. We would still be living in caves and wearing animal skins for clothing without it. The key is to respect everyone's right to express their opinion. This is the beauty of BYC, and I thank everyone for their generous advice!

I, for one, would rather use something like pumpkin seeds before I tried medication. Especially since these are my first chickens and I have no idea what I'm looking for. I have not seen anything that even remotely resembles a worm. So, that being said, the pumpkin seed and buttermilk seems like a good idea. My chickens spend time ranging around my yard when I am home in the afternoon and evening but are in their pen during the day. Today I saw what looked like a very loose poop. Is this a bad sign? All this poop talk...

I am NOT positive what I have seen 2x in the poo are worms or not...all I know is they look like ovals and they stretch out to look sort of like plenairia or how ever you spell it. They are between the size of a sesame seed and large couscous. what I have seen in the poo moves.

I so very want a milk goat, but after getting my neighbors to accept a rooster, I don't have the heart to suggest a goat.. just yet! Oh, it's legal, just want to be a good neighbor in return.

You may or may not have seen any. The worms don't live free swimming in the stomach. They are attached to various parts of the walls of the digestive track. They live there sucking blood from the host. It is usually an accident if you actually see one that has detached itself.

That sounds almost like tape worms. cestoda require a ...different direction from ivermectin all together.
Look for some past posts by dawg, or it may already have been mentioned here.
I hate tapeworms. well, all of them really.

Trouble with worms is that once you see worms in the droppings, the worm load is downright horrific. That's why when a vet does a float, he's looking for eggs -- you can find them before they're a problem. You can't really spot eggs just poking around in the manure, though, you do need a microscope.

Refer me to a scientifically conducted study supporting this.

I really don't like when everything is being questioned all of the time on here. Why? As soon as anyone posts anything to show proof then it's knocked down again because someone will question if they are the ones who are selling the product so that does not count or the FDA approves it but again it's because the studies were from the sellers. So it just causes arguments and does not solve anything and people don't learn anything from this type of questioning.

I'm have to disagree, although the request for proof could have been phrased more politely. We all care about the health of our chickens, don't you want to know if an assertion that a treatment will work is contentious or not? I sure do, and I definitely learn from it. I feed pumpkins & seeds, AND I check my chickens poop for worms under the microscope because I learned on BYC that pumpkin seeds are not a proven remedy. So, I encourage us all to keep questioning, it is how we learn.

I disagree here. The vast majority of us use this website to obtain information from people that have decades of experience and days of experience. I for one will take the advice from a multi genererational chicken farmer over a FDA study anytime. If I was after proof from studies, I would simply do my internet search but I want more than that. I take all information into account when raising my birds but I put more weight on someone with time experience over a college study or company study or government study anytime. I still consider them in my choices. This is a website of experience giving not of showing and proving studies.
