Puppy pet store rant...

The price of designer dogs makes me sick much less the price of pet store puppies. Only good experience i have had with a pet store dog is a JRT that my aunt bought. She paid 500 i think and i laughed at her and said oh kassie what did you get yourself into shes in her 40s doesn't live an active lifestyle and has a very small yard. her pup daisy had some problems but the petstore made good and paid for all the vet visits and meds. today daisy is the most relaxed JRT i have ever met and is a joy to be around unlike many others i have encountered (i love all breeds of dogs and have no problems with a single one). yes she has a very poor build and is not a well bred dog but turned out to be one of the few good stories about a petstore pup i have ever heard. Me and my husband had gone into a petstore while i was trying to convince him to get a second dog and he fell in love with an American Bulldog solid white adorable girl. we asked to see her was playing with her and the clerk said you came at a good time she is on sale for 1700.....needless to say we sadly put her back. i would have hated to buy a pup from a petstore but when i think about the person that may have gotten her instead it makes me shiver. large strong dog that needs a good training regime that would be the only reason for me to ever adopt a pup from a petstore is because just like a dog in a shelter its not the dogs fault its there. but we rescued a bully mix from a shelter a few weeks later and paid 80 for him neutered and everything at 4 months old he was on death row soon because he was the last of 20 bully type pups there. that dog is now my constant companion and the second best dog i ever had now if he would just quit being destructive he would be number one.
The only petstore that i have much respect for is Petsmart. They host local adoption days on saturdays i don't know what kind of conditions all their other small animals come from but i respect them for have adoption days

We never considered getting another dog after our much loved Lab Titus passed on several years ago. He was 15 and we felt that no dog could ever replace him.

Then, in Fall 2008, one of my wife's co-workers told her that he had successfully bred his two AKC registered Pugs. He wanted a puppy from those two to raise for himself, and he asked my wife if we would be interested in one of the pups, choosing second after him. We talked about it and agreed to at least look at the pups once they were born. To make a long story shorter, we went over to Dave's place when the puppies were 4 weeks old. We sat in his living room and they brought all four puppies in and just let them amble around. One lumbered over to me, snuggled down into my lap and promptly went to sleep.

That was Gus.

Gus was a gift to us a year ago on Valentine's Day, and we are just so grateful that he wasn't born in a puppy mill. We were fortunate enough to know the owner of both parent dogs, so we knew the pups would be of good character. I'm semi-retired and I have time to give Gus all the attention he needs, and at one year he is quite an accomplished young man. We walk on the leash twice a day and although he has his naughty moments, he is light years ahead of his three brothers in behavior.

I refuse to shop at any pet store that sells small animals like some do. I stopped shopping at PetCo because they refuse to stop selling ferrets, 90% of which end up abandoned in the ferret rescue shelter, or just dead. Ditto with any pet store that sells puppies. It breaks my heart to see pups in the store window, because you just know that their chances for a healthy happy life are slim, and they will likely end up in a shelter too once the newness wears off and their buyer realized that there is work involved with taking care of a live animal.

We made the first and last mistake of buying a Keeshond from the pet store and you can guess where she came from, a puppy mill down in MO. She was pretty small for a Kees and had alot of social problems, terribly shy and poor breeder which my Mom originally wanted puppies but decided against it after a ffew attempted matings from two different stud dogs which the dog was smart enough to sit down everytime the stud wants to mount her. After that, we got her spayed and she lived a very long life with us until I had to put her down myself.

My SIL bought her toy poodle which it ended up as bigger than toy sized, a Papillion and another one later on ALL from pet stores! They all had their own problems and they were hard to housebreak and developed some social problems. One has elipsey (sp). She paid alot of money for them! I told her rather sarcastically that she can do better in getting some from a reputable puppy breeder for a whole lot less and less problems. She said, who cares, I gave them a good home and its the breed I want and anyway, it is hard to find Papillion breeders in IL LOCALLY! ARRRRRRRRGH! Either she is dense about the problems and money investing in these three dogs, all got problems!

Our malls in Decatur and Springfield, USED to have dogs and cats and not anymore. Only the shelter adopted pets only and they require background check and a letter from vet and references.

Ask any responsible breeder they will tell you that commercial breeders are puppy mills. They are breeding for money not for quality dogs and most likely do no testing for hip, elbow, eye, and ear problems or breed to the animals standard. Breeding for money =puppy mill.

Depends on how you view it. Any of us good breeders are considered puppy mills to certain groups animal rights and rescue groups. heck I have even been called for just breeding show rabbits. i don't believe that all places that supply pets to pet shops are mills. I actually hate that term. Its gotten to be more on animal rights term then anything else. I would rather preffer bad breeder then that. some stores do buy their dogs from bad breeders because they don't know any better.

I would not boycot a store just because it sells small furry animals. that would lsoe the entire point of it being called a pet shop (place where people can buy pets) None in my area don't sell dogs. Sometimes the let the rescues come in and sell them instead. The one lady I know of that did sell them at her store bred her own dogs, and you could see the parents on the property. Nice looking pups and dogs. Sadly she no longer has her business.

What's even worse, or maybe even funny, is that they take advantage of volunteers and low paid employees since the people want to be around the animals.

They also tend to brainwash them into being against all aspects of breeding, including showing. They tend to think their way is the only way when is comes to caring for pets and animal husbandy. Many make it almost ipossible to adopt a pet from. If yo don't have afenced yard, and have intact animals in the house, you don't get that animal. Some won't even adopt to households with children.

Sometimes they will stalk and rabidly go after some breeders, and pet owners. Just because they do not agree with their practices. i know someone who has them stalk her in real life. They have called her cell phone, her home phone, called animal control on her, and her vet. Scarey huh?

I always have to lol at their views of pet shops. The only good one is one that only carries animal food and toys. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of it being a pet shop doesn't it?

There are good rescues out there that are soley in it just for the animals who do not bother anyone.
