Pups, mange and crossed eyes from google-ing

Revolution is not ivermectin. Revolution is selamectin. It's in the same class (avermectins) as ivermectin. They are not the same thing though. The side effects, effectiveness on various pests, half life, margin for dosing, etc... is all different. One of the advantage products uses moxidectin. Another avermectin but while ivermectin is quite safe and takes a lot to overdose most animals, aside from a few sensitive breeds of dog or similar you could use 2-5times the recommended dose of ivermectin and not see any major side effects in most cases, moxidectin is the opposite. Most horse owners don't even use it because it's too easy to overdose a horse, especially miniatures even with dewormer tubes that have specific weight markings on them. Horses have been killed using moxidectin. There's no way in hell I'd put it on my dog from a tube with a wide weight rating. Especially when there are safer things out there that do the same. Selamectin does have a slightly higher risk of side effects than ivermectin but it lasts much longer (1month instead of 1week) and kills alot more things so sometimes it's worth it. It's easily arguable that 1 or 2 doses of revolution spread out over 2-4weeks is better than several more doses of ivermectin every 7-10days. It also falls far below moxidectin if we compare risks. Pretty much everything falls below moxidectin if start comparing risks and side effects.... Yes these drugs are similar but they are not the same thing by far.

Akane -- you are correct. They are in the same class of drugs and for mange the Revolution didn't work nearly as well as Ivermectin. We gave it orally every other day for several weeks until the hair started to grow back and the mange was under control....

This was the Vets advise and since he knew we had A LOT of animals suggested that we use Ivermectin instead of Revolution on our animals.... Just a mis-understanding on my part and yes, had I did a web search, I'd have known the difference...

Well the pup is doing real good. The introductions have been interesting. The GSP likes him and let's him know when he's too rough. The CoonHound thinks he's the 4th Horseman of the Apocalypse. She did however give him a sniff down on the second introduction. I hope she accepts him. If we can get them through puppy hood I'm sure he will tell her who's boss. I just don't know if I'll make it till then. We had to rehome a doxie because the hound didn't accept her. Loved her as a playmate but we had to feed them separately, she wouldn't let her drink from the water dish and blocked her out of her doghouse (the doxie had her own dog house). This pup will not be so small so I hope all goes well. If not you'll be seeing an add on CL.

Oh and regarding neutering. Our vet waits till they are six months old before they will neuter. I know darn well it can be done sooner. The shelters out where we used to live would neuter at 12 weeks. Sure that's probably too soon but six months is ridiculous.

We got a puppy from a shelter and she was 8.5wks old and already spayed....

They figure as long as they're 5lbs or more they'll do it.... Not sure if I agree with doing it that early...

I had a dachshund that had it bad. For a long time. I reserched and found a way to get rid of it from a breeder site. It is very unorthodox, but I was desperate. And it worked.
I am not going to post it here because I will most likely get too much negative feedback so if you are interested pm me.

ON a puppy that young you will have to treat for one.. and I had a dog that came up neg, neg,neg.. never lost hair, just itched. So I started with the revolution treatment and did that on 9 poodles.. which are bathed regularly anyway which is probably why they couldnt find it with scraping or punches.

at the end of that , a few still had mild itching. so I order the small bottle of Ivermec pour on and used 1/2 cc per dog down the spine ever two weeks as I bathed everyweek, also very important to change ALL bedding areas and vacuum everyday...

NOw.. if this does not work, I'd say with confidence he's allergic to flea bites or its Demadectic mange.. which is inherited from mom, this is the mange that will cuz sores and a very uncomfortable dog.. and this takes a whole different treatment plan and drugs to get rid of. Good luck. Kim
