"Purebred" Sex Links

McMurrey Hatchery is in Webster City, Iowa not Texas. Ideal Hatchery is in Cameron, TX.

You're right, most readily available sex links from hatcheries are cross breds, but it is possible to acheive sexlink coloration by breeding different colors within the same breed, and you're also right in that the only real point of this is production/utility uses, as they do not breed true.

EDITED TO ADD: Has nobody actually done this? I have seen pictures of the Golden Cuckoo, which, I understand, actually tends more towards autosexing than sex-linked? But, I'd really like to see others.

I know that any black sex link cross will produce black hens with leakage in the hackles, and barred roos, so I am more interested in the appearance of the red sexlinks. Like I mentioned before, do the birds retain things such as lacing? Columbian coloration, etc?

Ok Well I havent seen anywhere where sexlinking and cross breeding was being confused but if there were, hopefully they are set straight now. But of course I didnt list all of the possible sexlink combinations, there are endless possibilities of pairings that could could be used to make sexlinks. Its not a matter of having knowledge on specific breed, there are hundreds of breeds that I havent messed with either but if you give the the breed and variety of two birds I can tell you if they will produce sexlinks or not. Its a simple as a non barred roo on barred rock hens to make Sexlinked Barring come into play and a matter of a pure Gold gene roo on Silver gene hens to make the Sexlinked Silver gene produce sexlinks. Or another non conventional sexlink would be crossing a Chocolate male bird on black or non choc carrying hens to produce pure Choc females and males that are Split for Choc but do not show the color. This method can be used in Chickens, Ducks, or Turkeys that have the Choc. gene.

Yeah, dont get those confused, The Sexlinked part would be crossing a BCM roo on Cuckoo hens to make Sexlinks where the roos look like Golden Cuckoos. The Autosexing part is a characteristic that breeds true when breeding a pure homozygous barred Golden Cuckoo Marans roo to Gold Cuckoo Marans hens which makes some differences in the chicks. But remember the Autosexing trait breeds true in the same color. Most pure barred breeds can be autosexed though it may take some eye training. Legbars and breeds like that work on the same Autosexing principal as the GC Marans and other varieties were a pure homozygous barred roo can be bred on barred hens.

And yes the lacing and columbian coloration or what ever color pattern is used is retained if both partents had the same pattern. like GL roo on SL hen or Partridge Roo on Silver Penciled hen or Buff Columbian roo on Light/ Silver Columbian hens, ect.....

I didn't ether.
There is also Leg Color Sex-linking.

Example -
Blue legged male x Yellow legged female = offspring males with Blue Legs and offspring females with White legs.

Note - parent must be pure for leg color.

Rareroo

This is the best pic I have of both the REd and BLk there is also a RIR or two in there. these birds will be 3 years old in September. I will order more in September and sell the older ones when the new begin to lay.

McMurray is head quartered in Iowa but they have Hatchery facilities all over. I order from the Home office in Iowa and my chicks are shipped out of North Texas. I would have to look for the bill from 2 years ago to see where.

The bright Gold is a crossed Buff Roo. He has a set of 4 1/4 in spurs Gentle as a pup unless your a rooster LOL

Is this distinguishable at hatching? Most times not...

The Blue legs of the young males are are Blue where as the young females are a off Light Blue/White and by about 3 to 7 days you should be able to tell at a glance.

Sure will.

I know someone using this cross. He breeds SQ Wyandottes in both colors and some cull silver females go into a pen with with nice gold male. He sells the pullet chicks as beautiful backyard layers and the males to be grown out for meat. He's always got people calling after pullet chicks for pretty layers so now he makes them.
