Purina feed problem******UPDATE Page 4****** Sunday, 07/11

I have heard back from Purina and they sent out an investigator to ask questions about the feed and we were told they had issues with other farms, But could not give any details on the numbers. They want to know if the feed was bad before or after it was milled. They took our info and said they would contact us with any info they find on the situation. I am very grateful for their concern for our small flock, ( about 80 between all of us in the family). We are very interactive with our birds and some are 7-8 years old. If I hear back from them, I will post it.

Be careful of the plastic bags, though. Our co-op bsmt was flooded and they removed bags that got wet, but apparently didn't remove one I bought. Because it wasn't paper, there was no water line on it. There was mold in it that wasn't apparent till we got near the bottom of the bag. I lost two hens when their crops became static because of the fungus in the feed. So, plastic is a mixed blessing.

I am thinking about switching or at least suplementing with Fish meal. I think the only brand the mill I go to carries is Purina but not sure I will have to call.

I'm sorry to sound so naive about this feed issue... but, how do you know that the feed was a 2010 product if the only information on the bag is the date, month, and mill?

hey folks, just have a question? Those of you who have trouble with feather picking, do you free range or are they confined? Don't mean to upset anyone I'm just curious. I've never fed anything but purina, and now i am wondering. I always just thought some waste was inevitable:/. This year egg production is lower, thought maybe I just had some dud hens. I'm in central il, not sure what else to try, or if I should. I would like to stay as close to organic as I can without being fanatical. Thanks so much

I have heard that you need animal protein in your birds feed or they will canibalize ect. Purina does not have this in there feed.
Also purina has some kind of exctract in it that will turn white birds a ugly yellow.

Just so you all know.... My local coop sells Home Grown variety. I had a question about the feed last week and when I called the number on the feed tag it was Purina who answered the phone. So Home Grown is also Purina.
